🚨 New study from the University of Chicago links a 1% increase in eviction rates in Chicago census tracts to 2.66 more shootings.

🏠 Evictions disrupt "collective efficacy," a community's shared belief in working together, which can protect disadvantaged neighborhoods from gun violence.

📚 A 2023 study of five major cities found that over 55% of shootings occurred in just 9% of census tracts, correlating with factors like poverty and unemployment.

💡 Researchers suggest policy changes, such as capping rent increases or improving public housing, can limit evictions and potentially reduce gun violence.

• 🚨 Study finds shooting-free days declined in 9 of 10 major U.S. cities between 2015-2024, highlighting need for sustained peace periods.

• 📊 New metrics like "shooting-free days" are proposed to better track progress in gun violence prevention, encompassing non-fatal shootings and periods of peace.

• 🏙️ San Diego consistently led in shooting-free days across all metrics, while Chicago consistently ranked lowest. Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth showed significant declines, indicating reduced progress.

• 🔬 Researchers used data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) for this first-ever city-wide calculation of shooting-free day metrics.

🔫 7.3% of U.S. adults, or approximately 19.4 million people, have seriously considered shooting another person in their lifetime, according to a new national study.

🔫 In the past year, 3.3% of respondents (over 8.6 million individuals) reported having these thoughts. Owning a gun did not increase the likelihood of having these thoughts.

🔫 Among those who considered shooting someone, 21.3% thought about acquiring a gun to do so, translating to about 4.1 million adults. Approximately 1.5 million people reported carrying a weapon with intent to shoot.

🔫 Top targets included enemies (over 50%), strangers (25%), family members (10%), and romantic partners (similar percentage). About 14% considered a government official, and nearly 7% considered a police officer or military member.

Fear and social pressure are ‘overarming’ the US. As more people arm, others feel compelled to do the same as chances of confronting someone with a gun increases. The fear of being the only unarmed person in a confrontation is enough, on its own, to push gun…
🔫 Dartmouth study reveals how personal choices and social networks lead to the U.S. having 120 firearms per 100 people, a phenomenon termed "overarming" where collective costs outweigh individual benefits.

🤝 An evolutionary game theory model developed by researchers Feng Fu, Daniel Rockmore, and Michael Herron analyzes how individual decisions to arm are influenced by others, potentially leading to overarming.

🔬 The study incorporated data from COVID-19 pandemic firearm sales, noting how a feedback loop of fear and arming, similar to "mutually assured destruction," drives gun purchases.

💡 The research suggests that public information campaigns and targeted interventions within social networks can help reduce overarming by altering perceptions of risk and leveraging community ties.

🌳 Green Space Linked to Fewer Gun Homicides, But Location Matters: A new study from The Ohio State University used Google Street View and AI to analyze greenery at the scenes of fatal shootings in Cook County, Illinois. More visible greenery along walkable streets was associated with lower odds of a firearm-related homicide.

⚖️ Disadvantaged Neighborhoods See Different Results: The protective benefits of green space were most pronounced in less disadvantaged neighborhoods. In the most disadvantaged areas, proximity to a park was surprisingly linked to a higher risk of firearm homicide, suggesting social and economic factors play a larger role.

💡 Context is Key for Prevention: Lead author Gia Barboza-Salerno emphasizes that simply planting trees isn't enough. The effectiveness of green space for violence prevention depends heavily on the local context and requires a comprehensive approach, especially in areas with social and economic disinvestment.
