A human-occupied vehicle probing the deep Pacific Ocean has captured footage of a massive undersea hydrothermal field. The new system, named the Kunlun hydrothermal field, is more than 100x larger than the Atlantic Ocean’s ‘Lost City’ 🌊🔍🌋

Analysis of nearly 9,000 body size changes spanning 450 million years finds warming events caused about twice the reduction in marine animal body size seen during other environmental crises, suggesting smaller marine animals could become increasingly common as the climate warms.

Dolphins Filmed Hunting With Shells – And Possibly Passing Skill to Their Offspring. Dolphins chase prey into a large, empty seasnail shell, then raise the shell above water and gulp down the contents. Study provides first evidence that mothers may be teaching shelling strategy to their calves.

🐬 Rare 'shelling' hunting technique by Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins filmed for the first time on Australia's east coast, specifically at Hervey Bay. This behavior involves using shells to trap and consume fish.

📸 Previously, shelling was only documented in Western Australia's Shark Bay. New videos from 2025, presented by University of the Sunshine Coast researchers, offer the first visual evidence of this strategy on the east coast.

👨‍🏫 The recent footage suggests mothers may be teaching the shelling technique to their calves, with an observed instance of a calf mimicking its mother's actions shortly after. This contrasts with previous findings indicating peer-to-peer learning in Shark Bay.

🐬 Bubbles, a bottlenose dolphin at Lady Elliott Island Eco Resort, exhibits kleptoparasitism (stealing food) by stressing fish until they regurgitate their meals, which Bubbles then eats. This behavior has been observed since at least 2017.

🔬 A new paper in Ecology and Evolution focuses on Bubbles's unusual feeding strategy, with researchers documenting 20 foraging sightings between June 2021 and October 2025, 11 of which involved kleptoparasitic behavior.

🌊 This marine mammal's kleptoparasitism is rare among aquatic species, although similar food-stealing behaviors are common across many other animal groups, including birds, mammals, and insects.
