Unsafe sleep factors found in nearly 75% of sudden unexpected infant deaths, CDC says Read Full Article #SuddenInfantDeath #SafeSleep #CDC
👶 A new US CDC report analyzing 4,861 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) between 2020-2024 found 73% involved unsafe sleep factors. Common issues included soft bedding (78%), sleep surfaces other than cribs/bassinets (75%), sharing sleep surfaces (59%), and stomach/side sleeping (46%).
👶 The CDC also noted substantial racial disparities, with Black infants accounting for 38% of deaths in the registry, indicating SUID disproportionately affects Black and American Indian/Alaska Native infants due to complex factors like access to resources.
👶 Safe sleep recommendations include placing babies on their backs for all sleep on a firm, flat surface (crib, bassinet) with an empty sleep area (no pillows, blankets, or soft objects). Room-sharing without bed-sharing is advised for at least the first six months.
👶 Parents should avoid smoking/nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, opioids, and illicit drugs during pregnancy and after birth, and ensure babies receive recommended vaccinations. Breastfeeding and offering a pacifier are also associated with reduced SUID risk.
