A precise proton measurement helps put a core theory of physics to the test: « The standard model of particle physics is confirmed to a tenth of a billionth of a percent. » Read Full Article #ParticlePhysics #StandardModel #PrecisionMeasurement #FundamentalForces…
⚛️ A new measurement of the proton's radius, reported February 11 in Nature, is precise enough to test a fundamental theory of particle physics.

🔬 Scientists measured the radiation frequency needed to shift hydrogen atoms between energy levels, revealing a proton radius of about 0.84 trillionths of a millimeter. This confirms a smaller proton size and rules out larger measurements from earlier experiments.

✨ This precise measurement allowed researchers to test the standard model of particle physics, confirming its predictions to better than a tenth of a billionth of a percent, specifically validating quantum electrodynamics.

CERN Discovers New Particle After Upgrading Large Hadron Collider Read Full Article #CERN #LargeHadronCollider #ParticlePhysics
⚛️ The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN has discovered its 80th new particle, named "Xi-cc-plus." This particle is similar to a proton but four times heavier.

🔬 "Xi-cc-plus" is composed of two "charm" quarks and one "down" quark, differing from normal protons which have two "up" quarks and one "down" quark. This makes it significantly more massive.

✨ This marks the second observation of a baryon with two heavy quarks and the first new particle identified after the LHCb detector upgrades in 2023. Scientists believe it will aid in testing models of quantum mechanics.
