An all-female wasp 🐝 is rapidly spreading across North America’s 🌎 elms 🌳. Read Full Article #WaspAwareness #FemaleEmpowerment #InvasiveSpecies #NorthAmerica #Elms
🐛 The elm zigzag sawfly (Aproceros leucopoda), a species of wasp first detected in North America in 2020, is rapidly expanding its range across 15 U.S. states, from New Hampshire to Minnesota and North Carolina.
🌳 Research indicates this pest may not be limited to elms, as it has been observed feeding and reproducing on Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata) saplings, an elm relative commonly planted in U.S. cities.
Reproductive strategy: The elm zigzag sawfly reproduces through thelytokous parthenogenesis, meaning females lay unfertilized eggs that hatch into more females, facilitating rapid population growth and spread.
🚗 Human activity, such as transporting cocoons on vehicles, has likely contributed to the sawfly's rapid dispersal beyond its natural range.
