🧠 A new comprehensive hypothesis proposes that stuttering is not solely a speech production issue but involves a complex interplay of neurodevelopmental, physiological, and clinical factors. It links moment-to-moment speech fluctuations with brain alterations.
🧠 Situational variability is a core feature of stuttering, meaning severity changes across different contexts. This variability is categorized into stereotypical, time-based, and individual differences, challenging previous models that focused on static dysfunctions.
🧠 The right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) is identified as a key player, potentially acting as both a compensatory mechanism and a causal factor in stuttering, particularly due to its altered connectivity and sensitivity to "warning signals" generated by the self-monitoring system (SMS) during speech.
🧠 Dopamine dysregulation, specifically elevated extracellular dopamine due to potential D2 autoreceptor dysfunction, is proposed as a unifying mechanism. This leads to a "functional dopamine deficit," contributing to symptoms like ADHD and influencing the striatum and other brain regions.

New study links stuttering severity to heightened anxiety and altered sound processing in the brain
A new study in BMC Psychology suggests stuttering is more than a physical speech disorder. Researchers found that adults who stutter experience differences in auditory brain processing and higher anxiety, which both scale with their stuttering severity.

🧠 Adults who stutter show differences in how their brains process sound and report higher levels of anxiety than fluent speakers. These sensory and emotional factors are linked to the severity of stuttering.
💡 A study by Agit Şimşek in BMC Psychology found that stuttering is more complex than just a speech motor issue, involving interactions between brain function, emotions, and speech.
📈 Brain wave responses to sounds were delayed and weaker in adults who stutter compared to a control group, with these differences becoming more pronounced as stuttering severity increased.
✨ The findings suggest that evaluating both neurological and psychological factors could lead to improved therapies for people who stutter, offering a more holistic understanding of the condition.

🚀 New Corpus to Study Stuttering in Brazilian Portuguese
🇧🇷 A new database is being built to collect and analyze the speech of individuals who stutter in Brazilian Portuguese, aiming to fill a significant gap in current research. This corpus will include children, adolescents, and adults, covering various stuttering types and severities.
🗣️ The project utilizes the Dynamic Model of Speech Rhythm to analyze how stuttering impacts speech flow, treating stuttered and fluent speech as a continuous process rather than separate events.
📈 The corpus design integrates clinical and acoustic data, enabling detailed investigations into speech rhythm and the effects of stuttering. Preliminary analysis shows differences in disfluency occurrences after phrasal stresses.
👥 Fifteen participants have already agreed to join the project, which will collect speech samples through conversations, monologues, and reading tasks. Data analysis will involve both speech-language pathology assessments and acoustic phonetics.
