'Superager' Brains Defy Cognitive Decline. We Finally Know Their Secret.
"Earth-shattering."
Super agers 🧠, people with exceptional mental clarity 💡, are 68% less likely to carry the Alzheimer's associated APOE-ε4 gene 🧬 and 19% less likely than cognitively normal peers aged 80+ ⏳ to carry the same gene

Study finds so-called super agers tend to have at least two key genetic advantages
Study focuses on so-called super agers — people ages 80 or older whose cognitive function is comparable to people 20 or 30 years younger.

🌟 Super Agers (80+ with younger cognitive function) are 68% less likely to have the APOE-ε4 gene variant, a major genetic risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease, compared to individuals with Alzheimer's dementia in the same age group.
💪 The study, published Jan. 16 in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, also found super agers were 19% less likely to carry APOE-ε4 than cognitively normal participants aged 80+.
✨ For the first time, super agers showed a higher frequency of the protective APOE-ε2 gene variant, being 28% more likely to carry it than cognitively normal controls (80+) and 103% more likely than those with AD dementia (80+).

People who live past 100 may owe part of their longevity to having an abundance of cancer-killing immune cells, researchers say. These rare T cells appear far more abundant in centenarians and supercentenarians than in younger adults. Read Full Article …
🔬 New research suggests a key to exceptional longevity might lie within our immune system, specifically in a rare type of T helper cell (CD4 CTLs). These "killer" cells, usually infrequent, appear to significantly increase in supercentenarians (those living past 110).
📈 In a study of 28 Japanese participants, the proportion of these CD4 CTLs rose from 4% in those in their 70s-90s, to 9.6% in centenarians, and a remarkable 17.6% in supercentenarians. These cells showed no signs of exhaustion and appeared to be cloning themselves in response to age-related threats.
💡 Immunologists believe this "selective expansion" indicates the immune system may continue to adapt to challenges even in extreme old age, potentially helping individuals survive age-related illnesses and cancerous cells. The findings suggest immune adaptation could be a factor in exceptional longevity.
