Nickel-enhanced biomaterial becomes stronger when wet – Physics World Read Full Article #NickelBiomaterials #WetStrength #BioinspiredMaterials #PhysicsWorld #MaterialScience
💡 Researchers at IBEC have developed a novel biomaterial from chitin, inspired by nature, as a potential plastic replacement.

💧 This new material strengthens when exposed to water, unlike most biomaterials that weaken.

🔬 The biomaterial, a nickel-doped chitosan, showed tensile strengths between 30-40 MPa when dry, increasing to 53.01±1.68 MPa when wet, similar to high-performance plastics. It also demonstrated a biodegradability half-life of approximately four months in soil.

🌍 A zero-waste production cycle has been developed, utilizing expelled nickel and water for subsequent batches, with potential for large-scale production.

Engineers demonstrate cheaper, greener method to create high-quality graphene by grinding and flash joule heating peanut shells Read Full Article Here are five hashtags in a single block with no punctuation:engineeringgraphene greenerenergy cheaperproduction…
🌱 UNSW Sydney engineers have discovered a cheaper, greener method to produce graphene from discarded peanut shells, potentially transforming agricultural waste into valuable materials for electronics and energy storage.

⚡ The new process involves heating peanut shells to remove impurities, followed by flash joule heating (around 3000°C for milliseconds), which rearranges carbon atoms into high-quality graphene in about 10 minutes.

💰 This sustainable method avoids chemicals and uses significantly less energy, with energy costs estimated at just US$1.30 per kilogram of graphene produced.

🚀 Researchers aim for commercialization within 3-4 years and are exploring other organic waste like coffee grounds and banana peels for graphene production.
