🤔 UConn research by Zexin “Marsha” Ma suggests sympathy, not just fear or anger, is key to convincing people to stop harmful behaviors like excessive drinking due to cancer risks.
📊 A study published in Health Education Research tested narrative (showing lived experiences) versus nonnarrative (like endoscopy images) warning labels for alcohol. Narrative labels evoked more sympathy and were the only emotion consistently linked to intentions to reduce drinking across different age groups.
😨 While fear was linked to drinking reduction intentions in online adult drinkers, it did not affect college students. Anger proved counterproductive, and disgust was ineffective.
💡 The research highlights that narrative labels depicting relatable characters with clear emotional expressions, matching text, and contextual information are most effective. Future campaigns could also explore financial and emotional burdens of cancer, not just health effects.
