Scientists recorded the brain-wave voltage in mice and found that small regions of the brain shutdown to take microsecond naps while awake and 'flicker' awake while asleep | These findings offer insights into neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, which are linked to sleep dysregulation.

Classical music may boost the mood of people with treatment-resistant depression | Study found that music generated antidepressant effects by synchronising brainwaves between the auditory cortex, which processes sensory information, and the rewards circuit, which processes emotional information.

To flexibly organize thought, 🧠 the brain makes use of space 🗺️: « MIT researchers tested their theory of spatial computing, which holds that the brain recruits and controls ad hoc groups of neurons for cognitive tasks by applying brain waves to patches of the cortex. »

Live music causes brain waves to synchronize more strongly with rhythm than recorded music Read Full Article #Neuroscience #Brainwaves #MusicScience
🎧 A new study published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience reveals that listening to live music synchronizes brain waves more strongly with musical rhythms than listening to recordings.

🎧 This enhanced brain-music synchronization, termed "cerebro-acoustic phase-locking," was found to be approximately 31% higher for live performances of fast-paced music.

🎧 The study also discovered a direct link: stronger neural coupling with music's rhythm during live performance predicted increased pleasure and engagement for listeners.

🎧 Researchers Arun Asthagiri and Psyche Loui conducted the study, partnering with the New England Conservatory and involving 21 musically trained participants.

Researchers argue brain waves actively steer neurons rather than merely reflecting them, making thought a partly analog process. If correct, the theory helps explain why anesthesia erases awareness while leaving the brain's wiring completely undamaged.
