Groundbreaking study warns that ocean warming 🌊 and acidification 🌡️ — two major consequences of global climate change — threaten bryozoans, the ‘marine architects’ 🏗️ of underwater habitats, by altering their structure, mineralogy, and microbiome, risking entire marine ecosystems. 🌍

More than half of the world's coral reefs were bleached between 2014-2017 -- a record-setting episode now being eclipsed by another series of devastating heatwaves. Reefs are currently experiencing an even more severe Fourth Event, which started in early 2023

Rising ocean temperatures are leaving mangrove forests "short of breath." A global study of 23 regions found that high CO2 and low oxygen levels already push these nurseries to their limits, threatening the survival of sensitive fish species as stressful tidal cycles lengthen.

Large "warm-bodied" fish like tuna and sharks require four times more energy than cold-bodied species to survive. New research reveals a scaling mismatch where heat production outpaces heat loss as they grow, creating an "overheating predicament" that threatens these predators as oceans warm.

Climate models and observational data disagree because climate models exaggerate the greenhouse gas impact on recent interhemispheric temperature patterns and tropical climate Read Full Article #ClimateChange #ClimateModels #GlobalWarming
🌡️ New research from Northeastern University explains a discrepancy: climate models predicted faster ocean warming in the Northern Hemisphere, but 70 years of observational data show the Southern Hemisphere is warming faster.

💨 The reason? Climate models, according to researcher Chengfei He, are too sensitive to greenhouse gases, overemphasizing a feedback loop involving wind speed, ocean temperature, and evaporation.

🌍 Instead of global average surface temperature, looking at the "interhemispheric temperature contrast" (the difference in mean sea surface temperature between hemispheres) reveals the Southern Hemisphere's faster warming.

💧 This finding has implications for tropical weather, as it suggests the tropical rain belt, hurricanes, and areas at risk from drought and wildfires will shift south of current model predictions.

🌍 New research published in Oceanography concludes that human-induced climate change, not El Niño, has driven every global coral bleaching event over the past four decades. Greenhouse gas emissions have warmed oceans so significantly that El Niño now acts as a trigger rather than the root cause.

🌊 The study found that without climate change, coral bleaching would be rare and isolated. Every global bleaching event since 1998, including those in 1998, 2010, 2014-2017, and the current one starting in 2023, required human-caused warming to push ocean temperatures beyond critical thresholds.

📉 Projections indicate that by 2028, human-caused warming will outweigh El Niño's influence globally. This means bleaching will increasingly reflect persistently warmer oceans rather than solely natural climate cycles, with significant implications for reef ecosystems and coastal communities worldwide.

A study using Mediterranean temperature and salinity records from 1950–2025 found the sea is warming and becoming saltier at an accelerating rate, with significant changes extending thousands of meters deep and surface warming since 2000 reaching 2–3 times the global ocean rate.
