Scientists modified structure of existing antibiotic, vancomycin. Compared to the original vancomycin, EVG7 was found to be 100-to-10,000 times more potent against a range of bacterial pathogens, with fewer side effects when tested in mice. This may help against resistant bacteria like MRSA or VRE.

Infections caused by bacteria that no longer respond to many antibiotics are climbing at an alarming pace in the U.S. 🚨📈, new federal data shows. Between 2019 and 2023, these hard-to-treat infections rose nearly 70% ⚠️, fueled largely by strains carrying the NDM gene 🦠.

Use of controversial weedkiller, in particular glyphosate, inadvertently selects for drug-resistant bacteria that can spread to hospitals Read Full Article #GlyphosateResistance #AntibioticResistance #PublicHealthScience
🦠 Weedkiller Linked to Superbug Spread: Controversial weedkiller glyphosate may inadvertently be driving the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria, which can then spread to hospitals.
🔬 Widespread Resistance Found: In a study comparing hospital, agricultural, and nature reserve bacteria, researchers found that 74% of hospital strains were resistant to carbapenems, antibiotics used as a last resort. Worryingly, all hospital strains were also highly resistant to glyphosate.
🔄 Two-Way Transmission: Bacteria resistant to both antibiotics and glyphosate can travel between agricultural soils and hospitals through wastewater and other environmental pathways, creating a concerning cycle.

A medieval remedy could offer ideas for beating antibiotic resistance Read Full Article #AntibioticResistance #MedievalRemedies #ScienceNews
🦠 Ancient Remedy Fights Superbugs: A 10th-century medicinal recipe, when tested by modern scientists, shows promise in combating antibiotic resistance.
🧪 Multi-Target Approach: The medieval concoction, made from ingredients like garlic, onion, bile, and wine, damages bacteria in multiple ways, making it harder for them to evolve resistance compared to single-molecule antibiotics.
🔬 Slows Resistance Development: Harmful bacteria in lab cultures developed resistance to the ancient mixture much more slowly than to conventional antibiotics, with some requiring significantly higher doses to overcome.
💡 Future of Drug Discovery: Researchers believe this ancient remedy could inspire the development of new, multi-pronged treatments for future bacteria-fighting drugs.
