New 🔬 research identifies 🧭 method of extracting ♻️ rare earth elements 🌍 from mining waste product ⚡ that is two to three times more efficient 🚀 than previous approaches Read Full Article #RareEarthElements #MiningWaste #EfficientExtraction #SustainableMining…
🔬 Northeastern University researchers have developed a new technique that can double rare earth element extraction from coal mining waste.

🧪 This method uses a chemical pretreatment with sodium hydroxide and nitric acid, combined with a specialized microwave reactor to control temperature, achieving 2-3 times greater efficiency than standard methods.

💡 Rare earth elements are crucial for magnets, electronics, and batteries, and this research could unlock a significant domestic source from billions of tons of U.S. coal tailings.

These tiny drones are powered by sound: Engineers have designed acoustic cavities that convert sound waves into thrust, propelling small robots and ultralight aerial vehicles without on-board actuators or electronics. Read Full Article #AcousticDrones …
🚀 EPFL engineers have created miniature robots and aerial vehicles powered by sound, utilizing acoustic cavities that convert sound waves into directional thrust without traditional motors or electronics.

🚤 Centimeter-scale boats were propelled and navigated using up to three sound-activated cavities tuned to different audible frequencies, demonstrating programmable autonomous movement.

🚁 Ultralight flying vehicles ('microfliers') weighing just 150 micrograms were built with microscopic cavities, some generating rocket-like upward thrust at ultrasonic frequencies, others enabling helicopter-like lift with spinning blades.

💡 This breakthrough, published in Science Advances, paves the way for sound-responsive robotics and further miniaturization, with potential for devices that change shape in response to sound.
