Reviving neglected indigenous pulses ("orphan crops") for nutritional security, soil restoration, and climate resilience.

​𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 & 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻

​Concentration Risk:
Just 5 pulses (arhar, chana, mung, urad, masoor) account for ~90% of production; only 8 of 14 native species are routinely grown.

​Import Dependence:
India imported 7 million tonnes (2024 25) and 6 million tonnes (2025 26) of pulses.

​Orphan Crops:
High potential varieties (Moth bean, Khesari dal, Horse gram, Faba bean) are neglected by agricultural R&D.

​𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 & 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝘅𝗲𝘀

​Ecological Benefits:
Nitrogen fixing, highly drought hardy, and ideal for restoring degraded lands (>98M ha in India) with minimal inputs.
​Nutritional Value: Protein dense (Khesari dal: 26 28%) and rich in bioactive compounds.

​Toxin Mitigation:
Simple post harvest steps (salt water soaking, sprouting, cooking) easily neutralize anti nutrients like beta ODAP in Khesari dal.

​𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱

​Policy Push:
Integrate orphan pulses into the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses (target 2030 31).

​R&D & Incentives:
Develop high yielding seed varieties, support rainfed smallholders, and promote value added pulse snacks.
