Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to another episode of StashAway's Weekly Market Commentary. Watch Freddy Lim, StashAway Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, and Philipp Muedder, Head of Financial Planning and Partnerships, discussing the latest global events and their impact on the markets.

In this episode,

1. World Health Organization (WHO) summit [01:42]
• President Xi vows to share China’s vaccine developments with other nations.
• President Trump threatens to pull US investments out of China during the summit.
• After Australia calls for an independent probe into the COVID-19 outbreak in China, China retaliates with trade tariffs on Australian imports.

2. The market reacts to early reports of Moderna’s vaccine trials [03:01]
• Markets rallied on the back of promising early results from the Moderna vaccine trials.
• It’s still too early to tell whether Moderna’s vaccine will be successful in fighting the virus, and how the vaccine will be brought to market.
• Factors such as government intervention and social pressure will play a role in pricing vaccines.
• Investors shouldn’t make hasty investing decisions based on news from vaccine trials.

3. Q&A: What is StashAway’s view on value and growth assets in the coming years? [04:55]
• Some sectors, such as energy and airlines may seem undervalued during the COVID-19 crisis.
• These sectors could be a value trap because the COVID-19 crisis has impacted these sectors fundamentally.
• We are invested in sectors where we see positive structural changes since the COVID-19 outbreak such as China’s technology sector.

4. Q&A: As Trump threatens to pull investments out of China, will China open up its markets to allow more international investments to come in? [07:59]
• Trump pressures US pension funds and endowment funds to stop investing in China.
• Even if the US stops investing in China, other international players will still continue to invest in sectors that are growing in China.
• China is increasingly allowing international banks and companies to hold majority stakes in their joint ventures with domestic companies.

Hi everyone! Time for another episode of our weekly market commentary. Watch Freddy Lim, StashAway Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, and Philipp Muedder, Head of Financial Planning and Partnerships, discussing the latest global events and their impact on the markets.

In this episode,

1. China aims to pass security laws in Hong Kong [01:47]
• China aims to pass security laws and a national anthem bill in Hong Kong to assert control over Hong Kong.
• The US condemns China’s move.
• China’s decision to enact the laws triggers more protests in Hong Kong.
• The World Trade Organization reconsiders Hong Kong’s free trade status.
• Hong Kong’s economy will likely be negatively impacted by these issues.

2. Singapore stimulus package [04:27]
• Singapore announced a $33.1 billion SGD stimulus package to aid households and businesses as the country re-opens its economy in phases.
• So far, Singapore’s total stimulus adds up to 20% to 25% of GDP.
• The stimulus could impact Singapore Dollar’s strength.

3. Q&A: What is the outlook for ESG investments? And, will StashAway include ESG investments in its investable universe in the future? [05:57]
• Some ESG sectors or companies are already valued at a premium.
• At StashAway, we consider all investments, including ESG investments holistically to make sure that your portfolios are positioned to grow in the long term without introducing additional risks.

4. Q&A: With the Fed’s aggressive quantitative easing, are Gold and inflation-linked bonds more attractive as inflation hedges for the long term? [09:36]
• When the economy improves, the Fed will likely take measures to keep inflation from increasing substantially.
• Gold is not only useful as an inflation hedge but also as a geopolitical hedge against global political uncertainty (Brexit, US-China trade war).
• Since inflation is still low, inflation-linked government bonds such as TIPS act as low-interest bearing government bonds. But TIPS are a useful hedge if inflation starts to rise in the future.

Good afternoon everyone! Welcome to this week's episode of StashAway's Market Commentary. Watch Freddy Lim, StashAway Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, and Philipp Muedder, Head of Financial Planning and Partnerships, discussing the latest global events and their impact on the markets.

In this episode,

1. US-China trade war takes a backseat as President Trump deals with nationwide protests in the US [01:21]
• Despite ongoing protests in the US, markets still moved up.
• Aside from removing Hong Kong’s trade status, the US has not made any moves to escalate the trade war with China.
• China’s move to reduce soybean purchases comes at a time when demand for soybean seasonally drops in China. Effectively, this move doesn’t impact the markets at all.

2. Q&A: How has StashAway prepared our portfolios for future uncertainties? [03:27]
• In August 2019, we re-optimised our portfolios to prepare for economic slowdown in non-US economies.
• And, we recently re-optimised our portfolios by reducing the allocation to the US dollar and increasing the allocation to Gold on some of our portfolios to prepare for the uncertain global economic environment ahead.

3. Q&A: As an asset class, is Bitcoin similar to Gold? [06:15]
• Unlike Gold, Bitcoin is a utility token that relies on the value of the network, the extent of the network, how sticky the network is and how many people transact on the Bitcoin network.

Good evening everyone! Welcome to another episode of our weekly Market Commentary. Watch Freddy Lim, StashAway Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, and Philipp Muedder, Head of Financial Planning and Partnerships, discussing the latest global events and their impact on the markets.

In this episode,
1. Markets unfazed by the spike in COVID-19 cases in the US this week [01:07]
• Markets didn’t react negatively to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the US this week.
• Markets don’t expect the Fed to announce any change in policy or add new stimuli in the Fed’s upcoming meeting.

2. Q&A:  How is StashAway mitigating the risk exposure to companies in an ETF that are permanently altered by COVID-19? [02:14]
• We look at companies that have a large weightage in an ETF and analyse how these companies are permanently impacted by COVID-19 (positively or negatively) when determining our portfolio’s allocation to these ETFs.

3. Q&A: Can we expect the US Dollar to depreciate against the Singapore Dollar in the near term? [06:20]
• Similar to the 2008 Financial Crisis, there is a risk that the US Dollar will depreciate against the Singapore Dollar in the near term as the Fed carries out quantitative easing.
• StashAway has reduced our portfolio’s exposure to the US Dollar to mitigate the currency risk.

4. Q&A: Does StashAway plan to add other commodities besides Gold in the portfolios? [08:34]
• There’s still more upside to Gold because of the limited supply of physical gold in the world.
• Gold acts as a portfolio insurance against geopolitical uncertainty.
• Don’t view Gold as an asset class to trade and generate return but as an asset class that is used to manage risk in a portfolio.

Good afternoon everyone! Welcome to another episode of our weekly market commentary. Watch Freddy Lim, StashAway Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer, and Philipp Muedder, Head of Financial Planning and Partnerships, discussing the latest global events and their impact on the markets.

In this episode,
1. StashAway Market Commentary 17 June 2020 [00:00]

2. The Fed’s gloomy outlook of the economy [00:25]
• The Fed’s gloomy message last week was intended to remind politicians on Capitol Hill that they still need to do their part to help the economy.
• The Fed is still maintaining its pledge to buy assets indefinitely.

3. The impact of a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on the markets [03:26]
• Volatility is still elevated in the markets.
• The options market is expecting higher than usual volatility to continue for at least the next 9 months.
• Investors need to stay vigilant and continue investing in a diversified portfolio at a risk level that they’re comfortable with regardless of whether markets go up or down.

4. China-India border dispute [05:26]
• Markets aren’t affected by border disputes as these disputes are ongoing issues globally.
• Rather, markets are more concerned about geopolitical tensions that can significantly impact the global economy, such as border disputes that have escalated to war.Q&A:  Will StashAway add markets, such as Vietnam into its investable universe? [07:25]
• Markets such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar are great potential additions to our investable universe.
• However, the current ETFs that track these markets aren’t very liquid and are costly.

5. Q&A: What does the incoming economic data tell us about the near-term economy? [10:15]
• The lockdowns made it difficult for economists to collect economic data, which affected the quality of the data and the timeline of the data release.
• We still need a few more months of data to come in before we can accurately gauge the rate of changes in the economy.

6. Q&A: Would StashAway consider adding silver or other metals, such as cobalt or lithium to its investable universe? [12:44]
• Cobalt and lithium have very specific uses and industrial purposes, and they’re extremely interesting and are good diversifiers.
• However, commodities tend to have contango, which affects the tracking error of the ETFs that track them.

• In fact the trade deal was still intact.

3. The number of new COVID-19 cases is on the rise [03:47]
• The surge of new COVID-19 cases may cause some countries to go into lockdown again.

4. China restricts food imports [05:23]
• The Chinese government puts in place more stringent measures to ensure food imported from the US and other countries isn’t contaminated by the virus.

5. Q&A: Is selecting winning stocks better than passively investing in ETFs consisting of stocks that benefited from the pandemic and stocks that are negatively impacted? [07:02]
• While some stocks in an ETF are negatively affected by the pandemic, they may turn around once a vaccine is developed and life goes back to normal.
• Instead of only investing in current winning stocks and overexposing your money to risk, maintain a diversified portfolio that has a balance of growth-oriented assets and protective assets.

6. Q&A: How does StashAway rebalance my portfolio when I deposit fresh funds? [10:33]
• If your portfolio’s current asset allocation has deviated from its target, your newly deposited funds will be invested to bring your portfolio back to its target asset allocation.

• Democratic nominee Joe Biden is leading in the polls.

5. Q&A: Will StashAway include commodities besides Gold in our portfolios? [06:48]
• Currently, the ETFs for commodities such as silver, nickel, and other metals have a higher expense ratio and could potentially be more volatile than Gold.
• The contango on these commodities also affects the tracking errors of these ETFs.
• We want to sure that the ETFs for these commodities are suitable for our portfolios before we include them in our investable universe.

• The massive policy stimuli carried out by central banks will continue to prop up the markets for the foreseeable future.
• As a result, markets will continue to be disconnected from the economy for the near term.

6. Q&A: Since technology stocks are showing higher returns at the moment, why is XLK not included in StashAway’s portfolios? [10:15]
