Virginia Democratic State Senator L. Louise Lucas, 82, has been federally indicted and surrendered to authorities in connection with an alleged marijuana trafficking and money-laundering enterprise.
This is significantly broader than a routine drug prosecution.
What federal prosecutors allege:
Seven defendants, including Lucas, her two daughters and her grandson.
100 kilograms or more of marijuana (approximately 220 pounds) allegedly acquired and distributed.
Five charges against Lucas: racketeering conspiracy, marijuana distribution conspiracy, money-laundering conspiracy, honest-services fraud conspiracy and maintaining a drug-involved premises.
Abuse of political office: Prosecutors allege Lucas used her influence as chairwoman of Virginia’s Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee to protect the enterprise and influence legislation for financial gain.
