📜🛩🥇5 May 1896. Venetian highly praised and decorated military officer, aviator, war hero Pier Luigi Penzo was born in #Malamocco island in Venice #Lido.
Penzo has been 1 of the most important Italian pilots in World War I, and a legendary one all over Europe because he survived the shooting down of his airplane in former Jugoslavia and imprisonment by the Austrian troops.
After the war he became friend with Italian poet and writer Gabriele D'Annunzio and officer and politician Italo Balbo, who both admired and praised him.
Unfortunately Penzo died on 29 September 1928 in his airplaine crash due to bad weather, while on a mission in France. His body was found many days later, transported to Venice with all highest honours and buried in the Cemetery of #SanMichele.
In the pictures above☝️, Pier Luigi Penzo photo on the first page of the Venice newspaper Il Gazzettino, the commemorative statue at the #Giardini, and the Venice Football Stadium which was (still today is) entitled to Penzo.
