🎥12 October 2001. Dolomites in Movie Series.
20 years ago Vajont, an Italian disaster film directed by Renzo Martinelli was released. The film is about one of the biggest tragedies in history caused by man in his constant nature rape...
Longarone a small town at the #Dolomites feet was completely cancelled (and more than 2000 people died) on 9 October 1963, by a tremendous water flood caused by a mountain collapsing on an artificial lake. But the primal and only responsability of the desaster was on those who decided to build the Vajont Dam where everyone knew they shouldn't: so public and private companies and ultimately the State were to blame! After the tragedy, as often happens, all main responsibilities were hidden under tons of bureaucracy and a shameful veil of silence...
I will write and post about the whole story in future, perhaps on the 60th anniversary of this tragedy. The #VajontDam is still there today, as it is the Monte Toc (the piece of mountain collapsed inside the lake), overwhelming and clearly visible from the town of Longarone, which has been rebuilt. Going over there and visiting the place in silence is one of the most shivering experiences...

⛰🌊 #9October 1963.

I took this picture few days ago in Longarone, not far from Venice and from #myhometown in the #Dolomites.
This is an installation that encloses in the background the #Vajont dam, the tallest dam in the world built between 2 mountains overlooking the valley.

Exactly 60 years ago #Longarone was completely destroyed by a flood and a landslide entirely caused by governments, energy companies and immoral corrupted men.
More than 2000 people perished in a second: one of my family was in the army at the time and was sent there the day after to dig and search for bodies and remains... he never recovered from what he saw and witnessed.

Today the Vajont Dam is still there as a message and warning on how money and power can be the worst enemies for nature and life.

Below an overview on the Vajont desaster👇
