What is Cloud Seeding or Artificial Rain?
When Delhi’s air turns toxic and the air quality index hits severe levels, the government turns to artificial rain for relief. But can cloud seeding really clean the air or control the weather?
🔍 What’s Happening:
☁ The Science: Aircraft spray silver iodide or salts into clouds to trigger rainfall. It works only when clouds already exist and can increase rain by up to 30 per cent.
⚙ Delhi’s Plan: The city hopes to use cloud seeding to wash away smog and improve air quality, offering short-term relief from pollution.
🌏 Global Lessons: Countries like China have used it to fight drought and manage weather, but results are mixed and sometimes disruptive.
⚠ The Limits: No clouds mean no rain. Results are uncertain, and chemicals used may affect the environment and health.
🔧 The Way Forward: Artificial rain can help temporarily, but cannot replace long-term measures like reducing emissions, improving waste management, and sustainable city planning.
📚 UPSC Topics: Environmental Science, Climate Engineering, Air Pollution, Disaster Management, Urban Sustainability, Science and Technology in Governance
