WhatsApp 2.16.7.175 supports the WhatsApp Desktop recognition (actually WhatsApp indicates WhatsApp Desktop client as Google Chrome).

(It should PROBABLY be a new row too in WhatsApp group info section and, if you will open it, you will be able to see all messages where you are mentioned - I wrote "Probably" because I saw WhatsApp 2.16.7.175 can scan all messages to find all mentioned messages, so I think the app does this to allow users to quickly read them).
Actually the mention feature, in WhatsApp for iOS 2.16.7.175, isn't complete.
We should wait next WhatsApp for iOS beta versions to try to enable it.

I think WhatsApp didn't probably want to include the full feature into 2.16.7.175 to avoid that people (like me) could publish screenshots of the new mention feature. They probably completed the feature but they didn't include it in the beta.
If in next WhatsApp beta versions the feature won't still be completed, my theory works.
This was the same for the GIF feature in 2.16.7.1 (WhatsApp didn't want that people could enable this feature), but there was a workaround to enable it.
I hope there will be a workaround for also enabling mentions, even if WhatsApp didn't include the full feature.

Mention feature of WhatsApp beta for iOS 2.16.7.175.
When you digit the "@" in the message, a new small menu appears with the list of all participants.
Note:
To mention a contact, you will have to insert the "@" + its name that you saved in your address book (so no push name or username).
So if I and you are in the same group with Samantha (for example) and I saved Samantha in my address book like "Sam" and you saved her in your address book like "Samy", to mention her I must write @Sam, while you must write @Samy.
If you write @Samy, I will read @Sam .
