💰 Institutions Held Crypto Through 50% Market Crash

A new Bitwise report reveals that 15 major institutions, including pensions and sovereign wealth funds, maintained or increased their crypto allocations during a 50% market drawdown. None of the interviewed firms sold assets due to falling prices.

Every institution in the group held Bitcoin (BTC) as their largest and longest-held position, treating it as a store of value similar to gold. Portfolio allocations typically ranged between 1% and 2%, though some reached as high as 13%.

While BTC is viewed as a core asset, investors expressed more caution regarding Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL). Several firms noted they might exit these positions if network growth in DeFi and stablecoins fails to translate into direct value for the tokens.

💰 Institutions and Sovereign Funds Swapping Gold for Bitcoin

Bitwise Head of Research Ryan Rasmussen reveals that major institutions, including Sovereign Wealth Funds, are actively selling Gold to allocate into Bitcoin. A new institutional adoption report shows these entities now treat BTC alongside gold as a primary hedge against currency debasement.

Data shows that during the volatility where Bitcoin dropped from $125,000 to $60,000, none of the 15 major institutions interviewed by Bitwise sold their holdings. Instead, many used the price dip to increase their positions.

Major players like Fidelity and BlackRock are maintaining Bitcoin allocations between 2% and 8%, while Wells Fargo holds a 2-3% allocation. The report highlights that ETFs have made the current market cycles shallower by providing consistent liquidity.

⚖️ SEC Proposes New Rules for Institutional Crypto Custody

The SEC has officially proposed a tailored framework to clarify how registered investment advisers and regulated funds can legally hold crypto assets. This move aims to replace decades-old rules from 1940 that have left institutional investors in a state of regulatory uncertainty for years.

The proposal would allow crypto to be held in self-custody under specific conditions and permits state trust companies to act as qualified custodians for client funds. It also updates financial audit requirements for advisers and broker-dealer custodial services managing digital assets.

⚡ Kraken Parent Partners with Singapore Gulf Bank for 24/7 USD Institutional Rails

Payward, the parent company of Kraken, has integrated with Singapore Gulf Bank (SGB) via its SGB Net network. This move enables 24/7 US-dollar funding and settlement for selected institutional clients across Asia and the Gulf region.

The partnership allows eligible institutions to deposit USD with Payward and use the funds immediately for digital asset activities. This eliminates traditional banking delays, providing constant liquidity for high-volume traders and firms.

In the coming months, SGB plans to leverage Kraken Prime for digital asset liquidity and pricing. This will allow the bank to price trades for its own customers using Payward’s market data.
