A person is measured by their skill and worthiness, and even the share that comes to them in life is shaped by that same excellence. Thoughtful speech, reflection and counsel with others, awareness and discernment, and above all the wisdom that continually guides them, all become companions along the way. Therefore, one should seek true well being through the right path, avoiding neglect of duty and carelessness in one’s responsibilities, so that a good name may rise from one’s deeds and worthiness. And with wisdom and noble character, one may walk the path toward greatness and true esteem.

Thus, the ill minded and misguided person who turns to falsehood and deceitful speech in life bears, above all, the harm of that wrongdoing himself. Neglecting one’s duties and failing in what has been entrusted to one brings a bad name; and uncontrolled, long winded speech bears no fruit but shame and humiliation. Such a person lowers himself from his own standing, falls into ill repute, and even becomes troubled by the goodness and prosperity of others. In the end, because of the path he himself has chosen and the deeds he himself has carried out, he becomes deserving of reproach.

Thus, in this world, the first step is for a person to remain devoted to the Good Religion and steadfast in it. One should not merely accept the Religion in word and in heart, but live it through one’s actions; remain devoted to it in worship and prayer, and never turn away from it. One should keep one’s faith in the Religion of the Mazdayasnians alive within one’s thoughts, until the eye of wisdom becomes so clear and illumined that one can discern benefit from harm, sin from merit, goodness from evil, light from darkness, and the worship of Mazda from the worship of the Daevas.

Thus spoke the wise Ōšnar: Do not desire food and sustenance for yourself alone, but be generous in giving and sharing. Know that what stands against kirbag and righteous deeds is the corruption that arises when greed, wrath, and uncontrolled desire gain mastery over a person. Yet we are not powerless before these forces. The demon of greed can be overcome through contentment; lust and craving can be brought under control through wise judgment and the cultivation of good character; and wrath can be subdued through good thoughts and a disposition inspired by Vohuman, the Good Mind. For when contentment takes the place of greed, when one’s character is nurtured toward goodness, and when Vohuman guides the mind, greed, wrath, and lust no longer choose the path we walk. It is then we ourselves, through wisdom and good character, choose our path toward goodness and kirbag.

As it is also said in the Gathas, at the beginning of creation the two Spirits came together and met within the body of Gayomard, the first man, where they confronted and mingled with one another: one stood on the side of life, and the other on the side of death. Ohrmazd desired life and its flourishing, and stood as its guardian, while Ahriman sought death and its destruction. And this encounter between life and death, which began with Gayomard, will continue among humankind until the final hour of the world; for what befell the first man will also come to the generations of humanity that follow him. Yet these two paths do not lead to the same end. On the side of the Druj stand the druvands, those who choose the path of corruption, and before them lies the darkest end and destruction. But the Ashavan, the one who walks in fellowship and covenant with Asha, abides beneath the wisdom of Ohrmazd, a divine thought that kindles an everlasting hope within the heart, where the promise of immortality continues to beat.

Know that a life spent on empty and fruitless pursuits leaves little behind but a poor name and a sense of having gone nowhere. Before you speak or act, think carefully about where your choices may lead and what they may bring into your life. The path we follow should ultimately lead us toward wisdom, good character, and a better way of living. Turn away from what is empty and without purpose. Nurture within yourself a strong desire to live with meaning and responsibility, and let that desire bring you back to consciousness and a sense of duty and responsibility, and an awareness of what is yours to do. Open your eyes to the world beyond yourself. See the community you belong to and the people around you, and let wisdom and good character help you recognize what is right and worthy, as well as the consequences of neglecting your responsibilities. Make knowledge and wisdom your companions along the way, so that your days are not lost to what is empty and your actions are not without meaning. Know your place and purpose in life, and with open eyes, an awakened mind, and good character, turn what is right and worthy into the way you live.

Thus, on Avan Roj, cherish the waters and care for them with reverence, so that the Yazad of the Waters may not be grieved. For caring for what has been entrusted to us is itself part of our duty and responsibility toward the good creations of Ahura Mazda.

Through the power of wisdom, even the waters hidden deep within the earth can be brought out from the darkness of the soil and into the light of the sun, so that they may flow toward cultivation and bring the land to life and prosperity. From these waters come benefit, comfort, and well, being for people and animals alike for beasts of burden, cattle, sheep, and all whose lives depend upon the flourishing of the land. Such is the power of wisdom: it recognizes what lies hidden and flowing within the earth and brings it into use in a way that gives rise to life, prosperity, and ease for the good creations.
