Along the Gumbinė–Darkiemis road, 10 km southwest of Gumbinė, on the left bank of the Ungura River, lies Nemerkiemis (Nemmersdorf; now Mayakovskoye)—a settlement of the Nadruvians, featuring a castle, which has been documented since the 13th century. The USSR military and the NKVD carried out a massacre of innocent civilians in Lithuania Minor. On October 16, 1944, a tank corps of the 3rd Belorussian Front briefly broke into East Prussia—specifically the area surrounding Gumbinė—killing village residents along the way. On October 21, in the village of Nemerkiemis, they perpetrated a mass slaughter; this act was encouraged by the front-line command as an act of revenge against National Socialist Germany. On November 2, an international commission of physicians determined that Soviet soldiers had brutally murdered 61 civilians and 50 French prisoners of war. According to witness accounts, the victims included 72 women (some of whom had been raped) and their children, as well as a 74-year-old man. The commission established that the residents of Nemerkiemis—among whom were *Lietuvininkai* (Lithuanians of Prussia)—were tortured and slaughtered in their own homes and on the streets. Some were tied to carts with their hands nailed down; others were crucified—nailed to their own homes and then shot—while an 84-year-old woman had her eyes gouged out. This woman—along with all the other women, and even girls aged 8 to 12—was raped and murdered. Thus began the Bolshevik terror in Lithuania Minor, an event classified as genocide.

In 2006, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania passed a law—subsequently signed into effect by President Valdas Adamkus—designating October 16 as the Day of the Genocide of the Inhabitants of Lithuania Minor.
