More than 50 UN members, including Georgia, call on Russia to agree to unconditional ceasefire

"...Russia simply needs to accept the unconditional ceasefire that Ukraine and the international community have been calling for for more than a year and a half. Ukraine wants peace. We want peace," Rasmussen said.

The countries urged Russia to respond to calls for a "full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire" and resume negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter...

There ya go, have some diplomacy. Are you still "confused"? Is it still "strange"? Give us some more of that famous sarcasm. Say something clever. Go ahead.

By the way, if you thought all of the latest chaos will actually teach people something, you were very wrong. People learned fuck all.

"Democrats" are enjoying Trump's troubles and call "Republicans" idiots and morons while shilling for a war against Russia and "Republicans" are still preoccupied with "sticking it to the shitlibs" and call "Democrats" idiots and morons while shilling for a war against Iran.

Absolutely nothing has changed. The empire keeps marching on. Both "sides" talk about the other "side" with such baffling vitriol. Half of the country believes one lie and the other believes another lie based purely on which oligarch they like more.

Abandon all hope.

Canada slaps retaliatory tariffs on $20bn worth of US imports

Canada announced on 25 August the imposition of retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth nearly $20 billion, matching "dollar for dollar" the tariffs Washington imposed on Canadian imports

"Our dollar for dollar, rate for rate counter tariffs as well as a multi billion dollar support package will protect workers, โ farmers, families, and businesses," Canada's Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne stated.

The retaliatory trade tariffs will take effect starting 8 September, and will apply rates of 15, 25, and 50 percent to 700 products brought in from the US, according to a government statement. Ottawa also set aside around $5.4 billion in assistance funding for those affected by the trade war, covering small and medium sized businesses, company cash flows, and workers whose jobs the US tariffs put at risk...

China warns of "retaliation" to US economic warfare on Iran

China warned Washington on 25 August that it is ready to respond to "maximum pressure" and "economic isolation" pursued by the US, while renewing its condemnation of sanctions on Iran and secondary economic measures targeting countries that deal with Tehran.

"An economic war and maximum pressure will not help resolve the issue," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.

"They will only further intensify contradictions and conflicts, cause risks to spill over, disrupt the global economic and financial order, and harm the legitimate rights and interests of other countries," he added.

The comments came during a press conference, as the spokesman was responding to a question about US Treasury chief Scott Bessent's announcement of plans to strangle Iran economically and target all countries that do business with it...

Trump teases renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" amid US Canada trade war

...Situated between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario, Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes and boasts the principal cities of Rochester and Toronto on its shores.

"The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to [be] doing much business with Ontario any longer," Trump posted to Truth Social on Tuesday morning...

Kremlin reveals why CIA chief visited Moscow

John Ratcliffe's trip revolved around intelligence service contacts, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

...Asked by the Washington Post on Wednesday about the purpose of Ratcliffe's trip, Peskov said it was for "contacts between security services" and declined to give further details. Separately, Peskov told TASS that "contacts with Putin were not planned."

Speaking to reporters later on Wednesday, Peskov said Putin had been kept in the loop about the talks, calling engagement between the special services "a positive phenomenon." However, he cautioned that it is "too early to say" whether the talks "will affect the overall process of bringing our bilateral relations out of the deep crisis..."

Iran war drives US farmers into worst crisis in 40 years

...US grain farmers have been plunged into their worst financial crisis in four decades as the war with Iran drives up diesel and fertilizer costs, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. The latest price shock compounds years of weak crop prices and falling incomes.

The mounting pressure follows the US Israeli attack on Iran in February, which prompted Tehran to largely block commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that previously served about a fifth of the world's energy supplies. The resulting surge in energy costs is hitting the US heartland ahead of November's midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress...

For those of you who didn't know, Wyoming, where I live, isn't all just farms and cattle. In fact, a slim minority of people are employed in farming and agriculture. Even if we were to broaden that category to "anyone whose livelihoods directly depend on farming and agriculture," it would still not even touch the double digit percentage. By category, most people are employed in the government and social services. Probably construction after that.

That being said, I do personally know farmers. Or "ranchers" as they prefer to call themselves (I guess it's cooler that way). And oh boy, have I heard my share of complaints from them over the past several years. And by the way, I'm talking about actual farmers here, not people who have some cattle and sell shit to their neighbors from time to time. I have some chickens (chickens are awesome), but that doesn't make me a farmer.

By far the biggest grievances I've been hearing are the tariffs. Not the fact that they exist, but the fact that they kind of don't. At least today. Tomorrow might be different. The confusion about tariffs is driving business owners in general up the wall. No one understands anything.

Imagine running a farm and the government says "20% tariffs on whatever." You do need to take measures to address it. Then once you do address it, the government says "nah, actually no tariffs." A month later, it changes its mind again. Then again. Then again...

While the government is having a blast being schizophrenic about tariffs, you're losing money and prices of everything are rising. From fertilizer to equipment. That's because the retailers aren't going to lower their prices back to the "before last month's tariffs announcement" levels. They'll keep the prices where they are. Not only that, but there are genuine shortages of stuff people NEED for farming.

"Just make it yourself bro..."

The idea that these people can make their own fertilizer (for example) is fantastical. That's not possible. I can do it for our garden. My wife keeps bothering me for not making enough compost. If you're reading this, I love you, but seriously, fuck your compost. Anyway, I can do it in volumes that are necessary for our relatively small garden. Even that is a bit of a nightmare and the FUCKING COMPOST is taking over all of my free time. Again, our garden is relatively small.

Making enough of it yourself to fertilize an entire farm is absurd. You absolutely must buy it. And here come the schizo tariffs and the economic wars we've decided to wage for no reason. Except, there is a reason in it for some. You see, the land that the farmers will eventually have to sell because it's no longer a viable way of making money will be bought out by large corporations. Trump's pals, of course. The people who paid for his campaign.

So what am I trying to say by all of this? As with many things, I'm trying to say that none of these measures are "mistakes" or "miscalculations." It's all purposeful and the people behind it know exactly what and why they're doing it. A farmer is way more likely to sell his land to you if he's not making money farming. In fact, many farmers will then take a massive loss at the point of sale just to get rid of it and find another profession.

Maybe they can find a job servicing a data center for that disgusting pig Altman, so he can inflate the AI bubble even more. "For the betterment of mankind," I'm sure.

Lastly, I'll say that none of this only applies to farming. It applies to all small businesses. They're all suffering and things will only get worse. The country isn't being run for you or for me, it's being run FOR and BY oligarchs purely for their benefit. It has nothing to do with policy. Our tech overlords want it all. And they will steal their way to it all. One way or another.

Iran, Oman agree on "temporary joint corridor" to restore Hormuz navigation

Iran and Oman have agreed on a phased framework to restore safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while preserving the sovereign rights of both countries, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Omani counterpart Badr Al Busaidi announced on 26 August.

"The consultations focused on the importance both countries attach to the resumption of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while preserving their sovereignty and sovereign rights," the joint statement says.

The statement added that "The two ministers discussed a phased framework that could provide a practical and implementable basis for moving forward, in light of the current situation in the strait resulting from the recent war and its tragic repercussions..."
