Every year on October 20, the world observes the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller, a day to recognize the professionals who keep our skies safe.

The date holds special significance, it marks the anniversary of the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA), which was founded on October 20, 1961. What began with just 12 founding member associations has grown into a global federation representing controllers in over 130 countries.‌‌

Air traffic controllers work around the clock, day and night, weekends, and holidays guiding pilots through takeoffs, landings, and emergencies. Their job demands intense concentration and is essential to making air travel the safest mode of transport. The 2026 theme, “Attract them, Value them, Keep them,” highlights the need to invest in the recruitment, training, and retention of these professionals to secure the future of aviation

Just 20 years old, Natalia Filgueiras has been identified as the co-pilot of the Learjet 60 that crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, killing all nine people on board.‌

The jet was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it went down in a residential area near West Palm Beach, leaving a smoldering crater and debris scattered across streets, sports fields, and homes. Footage showed the aircraft nose-diving into an intersection and exploding into a fireball.‌‌

Filgueiras, of Boca Raton, had earned her pilot's license at 17 and logged more than 1,300 hours of flight time. Her mother confirmed she died in the crash. The crash also killed the pilot, 55-year-old Jeff Gregory, and seven passengers. One person on the ground sustained a leg injury.
