National Payments Corporation Of India (NPCI) has released the UPI - MDR framework on select UPI transactions effective 15 October 2026.
Meme, Cartoons have already started. From Economics and Innovation perspective, a charge may be needed for long term growth but from Consumer perspective, a part of this burden will be paid by consumer, just like when govt raise duties on crude Oil, oil companies don't pay, they transfer it to customer. Most importantly UPI has become a Public Good and its benefit is not derived directly from the Product rather from massive economic and social by-products.

PIB FactCheck the Bank Amalgamation Image
One thing I don't understand is who creates such images. Do they even read Government policies, NITI Aayog documents and the overall broader discussion, or do they simply wake up one day, create an AI image and put it in a bank union group?
There is nowhere any discussion about SBI amalgamating with any other bank. Most importantly, considering the kind of market-cap growth SBI has seen over the last 3-4 years on the stock exchange and its clean balance sheet, I don't think the Government would merge any weak bank into SBI, unless a situation like Yes Bank arises.
In September 2025, a PSB Manthan was conducted, and in that, the Government said that it aspires to have at least 2 PSBs among the world's Top 20 banks by 2047, aligned with the Viksit Bharat vision.
The major discussion, based on NITI Aayog, is that there should be SBI + 3-4 large-scale PSBs that can compete globally and provide credit for major infrastructure projects.
Even as per Mint News in June 2026, the Finance Ministry is actively weighing a "Merger 2.0" proposal to consolidate India's 12 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) into 4 to 5 mega-entities. A high-level committee T V Somnathan was under discussion to shape these banking reforms, with discussions also exploring an increase in the foreign investment cap to 49%. (No News on the Committee Formation after it)
I believe, based on the balance sheet, deposit and credit profile, the possible names could be SBI, PNB, BoB, UBI and Canara Bank.
Most Importantly Government is already on Backfoot after NEET-UG GenZ Protest, their ratings have gone down and there is also Broader Unemployment related Youth Protest, I don't see any such hardcore reform in coming months.
