As Trump's tariffs loom yet again, Canada is left waiting to see what happens

Canada is again staring down the barrel of massive U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. With only days to go until U.S. President Donald Trump kicks off a trade war, Internal Trade Minister Anita Anand says Canada will need to wait and see what happens.

Anand, who met with U.S. officials in Washington this week, said Canada continues to stress that tariffs are harmful for both countries as the clock winds down to March 4 — when Trump will hit Canada with an economy-wide tariff of 25 per cent.

"We are steady at the wheel. We are prepared for any eventuality, but we will at every turn defend our country's economy," Anand said in an interview on Rosemary Barton Live.

On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick told Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News: "There are going to be tariffs on Tuesday on Mexico and Canada. Exactly what they are — we're going to leave that for the president and his team to negotiate."

1 dead, firefighters injured after flames engulf Barrhaven home

One person died and several firefighters were injured after a fire engulfed a home in Barrhaven on Saturday, according to Ottawa Fire Services (OFS).

Multiple 911 callers reported the fire on Swilken Burn just before 5 p.m., saying they could see flames and thick black smoke pouring from the home. When firefighters arrived, the home and garage were fully engulfed, prompting a second alarm.

Trump confirms he will impose 25% tariff on Canadian goods Tuesday


U.S. President Donald Trump says his long-threatened trade war is going ahead with tariffs on Canadian goods set to take effect just after midnight and there's nothing Canada can do to stop them.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the United States has been "a laughingstock for years and years" and he needs to take trade action against its continental neighbours.

The president has said he wants to punish Canada for a supposedly lax approach to drugs and migrants even though data shows a border crackdown is already producing results.

"Very importantly, tomorrow, tariffs, 25 per cent on Canada and 25 per cent on Mexico, and that will start. So, they're gonna have to have a tariff," Trump said.

Asked if there's anything Canada can do to try and hold off the tariffs, Trump said: "No room left for Mexico or Canada. They're all set, they go into effect tomorrow."

Canadian counter-tariffs set to go into force as Trump says he won't reverse course

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says a first tranche of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods will go into force at midnight if the U.S. goes ahead with blanket tariffs on Canadian imports.

"Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures," Trudeau said in a statement late Monday. "While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for our economy, our jobs, our workers, and for a fair deal."

Ontario rips up Starlink deal, plans to tax electricity in response to Trump trade war

Ontario will rip up its $100-million deal with Elon Musk's Starlink internet provider and U.S. companies will be banned from procurement contracts as part of the province's response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods.

Premier Doug Ford announced the measures Tuesday, adding he's warning lawmakers in New York, Michigan and Minnesota that if the tariffs "persist," Ontario will put a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity flowing into the states and potentially cut the flow off entirely.

Ontario supplies roughly 1.5 million customers in the northern states with electricity.

Perennial uncertainty of tariffs looms over B.C.'s budget

The B.C. government's 2025/26 budget came as the province is constrained by the start of a trade war prompted by U.S. tariffs, but political watchers say B.C. has many unmet needs and also needs a long-term vision.

The budget projected a record deficit of $10.9 billion as the government committed to spending on core services and set aside billions in contingency funds on Tuesday, the same day that 25 per cent U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports went into effect. But while the record deficit came under fire from many pro-business groups, a political science professor says that the B.C. NDP government is in a tight position, and residents would have to get used to short-term commitments and diversification as the province tries to insulate itself from outside threats.

Measles outbreak confirmed in Hastings County

Nine cases of measles have been confirmed in Hastings County, and the local health unit is warning of community exposure.

The South East Health Unit advised of a measles exposure that occurred at the Central Hastings Family Health Team in Madoc, Ont., between 11:11 a.m. and 1:11 p.m. last Thursday. The health unit is working with the medical centre to identify possible contacts. Measles is a highly contagious virus and spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, sneezes or talks, the health unit said in a Wednesday afternoon news release.

Man who sexually exploited vulnerable Edmonton woman sentenced to 5½ years in prison

A man is going to prison for pressuring two women into the sex trade, one of whom he trafficked and sexually assaulted after initially offering to help her get off Edmonton's streets. 

Christopher Becks, 39, pleaded guilty last year to five offences,  admitting to crimes that took place in 2022. Both victims' identities are covered by a publication ban.
Court of King's Bench Justice Marta Burns sentenced Becks on Wednesday to 5½ years in prison. With enhanced credit for time he's already spent in custody so far, he has about three and a half years left to serve.
