Canada PM Says 'Relationship With US Over'
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has boldly cut ties with the US after stating the two nations' old relationship "is over" amid Trumpโs tariff threats. Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting in Ottawa, Mr Carney said, โThe old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over.โ
He stated Canada would respond with retaliatory tariffs that will have โmaximum impactโ on the US, but is expected to speak to Trump in coming days. The steep tariffs are set to impact foreign-made cars, light trucks and vehicle parts when they come into effect on April 2.

Canadian researchers are being asked politically charged questions when trying to secure U.S. grants
Academic researchers are used to filing out forms when applying for grants, but Canadian scholars have expressed shock over a new questionnaire they are receiving when applying for funding issued in part or wholly by the U.S. government.
"Can you confirm that this is no DEI project or DEI elements of the project?" asks one question, with an accompanying link to U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order to nix funding from government programs dealing with diversity, equity and inclusion.
"Can you confirm this is not a climate or "environmental justice" project or include such elements?" asks another.
Yet another asks if a project "defends women from gender ideology" โ another reference to a Trump executive order.
Peter McInnis, President of Canadian Association of University Teachers, which represents 72,000 staff across more than 125 institutions, says they've been receiving messages about what he says is "most unusual, not only just to receive a questionnaire at all, but this one was clearly screening for ideological questions."

Supervised drug consumption sites win injunction, can stay open for now amid Charter challenge
An Ontario judge has granted an injunction allowing 10 supervised consumption sites to remain open while a legal challenge against a new provincial law is considered. The law bans such sites from operating within 200 meters of schools or daycares. Justice John Callaghan stated that the sites can stay open until 30 days after his decision, which will take months due to the complexity of the constitutional issues. The Neighbourhood Group, which operates a site in Toronto, filed a lawsuit arguing the law violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including the right to life, liberty, and security.

Manitoba Hydro proposes electricity rate hike of nearly 11% over 3 years
Manitoba Hydro is seeking permission to raise electricity rates by nearly 11 per cent over the next three years in order to fix aging infrastructure, increase generating capacity and mitigate the effects of drought and debt.
The Crown corporation asked the Public Utilities Board afternoon to approve three annual rate hikes of 3.5 per cent, beginning in 2026, according to documents published Friday afternoon. The hikes would follow a one-year rate freeze promised by the NDP government โ but criticized as reckless by consumer advocates and the Progressive Conservative Opposition.

49,000 without power in Ontario as ice storm moves through province
About 49,000 customers are currently without power in Ontario as an ice storm pummels parts of the province, Hydro One said.
The outages, which are concentrated in central and eastern Ontario, are being caused by tree limbs and branches weighed down by freezing rain that break and fall onto power lines, said spokesperson Tiziana Baccega Rosa.
She said some areas in the province, which are known as water-access only, may be without power for more than 24 hours.

Judge rejects Hudson's Bay restructuring proposal intended to save remaining stores
An Ontario judge has rejected a restructuring agreement for Hudsonโs Bay Company, increasing the risk of receivership. The agreement would have set an April deadline to save remaining stores and given more control to senior secured lenders. It also imposed a strict budget and required lender approval for any sale of the business. Justice Peter Osborne ruled the agreement was "neither necessary nor appropriate at this time."

At least 1 dead, 7 injured in collisions during weekend ice storm
Ontario Provincial Police have reported two major collisions and dozens of minor ones Saturday as snow and freezing rain pelts most of eastern Ontario.
Environment Canada became increasingly sure on Thursday and Friday that the region would be hit with a major ice storm over the weekend. The weather agency initially expected the freezing rain to turn into rain by Sunday, but the agency has since extended many of its freezing rain warnings into Sunday.

Sask. judge rules Regina refinery was justified firing 2 workers who wouldn't follow pandemic protocols
A Saskatoon judge has ruled that Consumers' Co-operative Refineries Ltd. (CCRL) did not overstep when it fired two workers at its Regina plant after they refused to follow pandemic protocols. Dallas Shuparski and Ward Rubin refused to comply with CCRL policy on vaccination and testing in October 2021. They were fired in January 2022.
The decision by Justice Richard Danyliuk overturns an arbitrator's decision that had ruled in favour of the workers. Unifor Local 594 had successfully grieved their firing, then CCRL requested a judicial review.
