No, Pierre Poilievre's net worth is not $25M, despite what dubious AI-generated articles say
In the run up to the federal election, many Canadians want to know more about the personal finances of the party leaders vying to be prime minister. But those who search for answers about this topic online will often find only misinformation and unsubstantiated claims promoted by AI chatbots.
Welcome to the first Canadian federal election of the generative AI age.
This is the story about how an obscure website featuring little-read articles that appear to be AI-generated became one of the most influential sources of information on the web when it comes to Canadian party leaders' personal finances.
Over the past couple of weeks, angry comments have surfaced on social media. Some Canadian voters are convinced that the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), Pierre Poilievre, has accumulated a vast personal fortune worth $25 million.

The consumer carbon tax is gone as of today. What will that mean for your wallet?
Prime Minister Mark Carney officially ended the consumer carbon tax on April 1, eliminating fuel charges of 17.6 cents per litre for gasoline and 15.25 cents per cubic metre for natural gas. Carney, who once supported the tax, reversed his stance during his leadership campaign, calling it too divisive. While the consumer tax is gone, industrial polluters will still pay a carbon price. The tax, introduced in 2019 under Justin Trudeau, aimed to encourage greener energy use but faced opposition from provinces and became a key target for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

Gas prices tumble across B.C. after carbon tax lifted in late-night legislative session
Gas prices across B.C. have seen a sharp decline after the consumer carbon tax was lifted in the early hours of April 1. B.C. was the first jurisdiction in North America to introduce widespread carbon pricing through a consumer tax in 2008. The policy was popular for years, surviving left- and right-leaning governments.
But Premier David Eby says it became "toxic," following years of "axe the tax" campaigning from both federal and provincial Conservatives, and he vowed to do away with it once the federal government introduced the means to do so. (Notably, the first party to use the "axe the tax" campaign was the B.C. NDP, after the carbon tax was introduced by the governing B.C. Liberals in 2008).

Neo-Nazi terror propagandist 'Dark Foreigner' guilty on all counts
An Ottawa man has been found guilty of sowing hate, fear and division by helping create racist recruitment videos and other terrorist propaganda for a now defunct far-right international terrorist group and a prominent neo-Nazi.
Superior Court Justice Robert Smith found Patrick Gordon Macdonald guilty of the three charges he faced: participating in terrorist activity, facilitating terrorist activity, and inciting hate against Jews for one or more terrorist entities, including Atomwaffen Division and the neo-Nazi James Mason.
Macdonald, 27, occasionally looked at the floor but otherwise showed no emotion during the judgment. His parents looked on from separate benches at the rear of the courtroom.

Rogers Communications and NHL announce 12-year, $11-billion rights deal
The NHL and Rogers Communications have signed a new 12-year, $11 billion CAD broadcast rights deal in Canada, set to begin after the 2025-26 season. Commissioner Gary Bettman said negotiations were smooth, with only minor adjustments needed on financial terms. The new deal, running through 2037-38, is more than double the value of the previous $5.2 billion agreement and includes an escalator structure with lower payments early on. In U.S. dollars, the deal is currently valued at $7.7 billion due to exchange rate fluctuations.

'A real sense of betrayal' among workers as Stellantis plans to idle Windsor, Ont., plant due to tariffs
Automaker Stellantis has confirmed it's shutting down its assembly plant in Windsor, Ont., for two weeks, largely because of U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles.
Company spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin said they're "temporarily pausing production" starting Monday, with operations set to resume the week of April 21.
"Stellantis continues to assess the effects of the recently announced U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles and will continue to engage with the U.S. administration on these policy changes," she said in an emailed statement to CBC News.

Untangling Mark Carney's father's ties to Fort Smith, N.W.T., Indian day school
Robert J. Carney, father of Liberal Leader Mark Carney, is under scrutiny for his role as principal of a federally run Indian day school in the 1960s. In a 1965 CBC interview, he used the term βculturally retardedβ to describe Indigenous children behind in school, a term now considered offensive. While he was not a residential school principal, children from nearby residential schools did attend the day school he led. Historians urge thoughtful discussion of his legacy that acknowledges the harm to Indigenous students.

Calgary daycare chain hits parents with 'optional' $330 meal fee while prohibiting outside food
Parents with kids in a Calgary daycare chain say they feel taken advantage of after new provincial rules took effect on April 1 that set a flat monthly rate of $326 for basic care but also allow operators to charge any amount on top of that for "optional" services.
In practice, the parents say, the new $330-per-month "meal service fee" at Clever Daycare hasn't actually been optional. "There's no outside food allowed in the facility, and therefore we're not able to opt out of the meal fee," said one parent, who didn't want to be identified because she worries speaking out might get her kid kicked out of the facility.

Canada lost 33,000 jobs in March as unemployment rate rose slightly to 6.7%
The Canadian economy shed 33,000 jobs in March according to Statistics Canada β the biggest loss since January 2022, while the unemployment rate ticked slightly higher, Statistics Canada said on Friday.
The agency said the unemployment rate also ticked slightly higher, rising to 6.7 per cent in March from 6.6 per cent in February.
The overall decrease also came as 62,000 full-time jobs were lost in the month, partly offset by a gain in part-time employment.
The hit came amid increased uncertainty caused by U.S. tariffs that have threatened economic growth.
The latest data also shows a reversal of some of the job growth that came at the end of last year and into January. While February posted fairly stagnant jobs numbers, January saw 76,000 new jobs created and December had 91,000.
