New Liberal government should scrap EV tariffs on China to help trade, climate goals, say critics
As Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, the federal government has its work cut out for it following a tumultuous few months in domestic politics โ not just on the tariff front with the U.S., but also with the world's second-largest economy.
In the fall, Canada followed in the footsteps of then-U.S. president Joe Biden in implementing an additional 100 per cent surtax on Chinese-made electric vehicles โ a move critics say makes less sense now considering the fractured relationship with our southern neighbours, our climate goals and China's counter-tariffs on Canadian canola farmers.
"That was a dumb policy, and we โฆ followed suit by demonstrating our allegiance [to the U.S.]," said Jessica Green, political science professor at the University of Toronto who focuses on climate change and global climate politics.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump held their first in-person meeting, where they discussed tariffs and Canada-U.S. relations. Trump stood firm on not lifting tariffs, while Carney emphasized CUSMA as a foundation for broader talks. The two also humorously disagreed on the idea of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state. Quebec Town Opposes Safe Drug Consumption Site Over Safety Concerns
Residents of Benoรฎt-Labre, Quebec, are opposing a proposed safe drug consumption site, citing concerns about community safety and the potential for increased drug activity. Local officials argue that the facility could attract more drug users to the area, leading to heightened security risks. Proponents of the site emphasize its role in reducing overdose deaths and providing health services to those struggling with addiction. Ottawa city councillor wants debate, reversal of Tewin development
An Ottawa city councillor wants to reverse a council decision made four years ago and prevent the 445-hectare Tewin development in the city's rural southeast from being built. But city staff asked to provide comments about Coun. Theresa Kavanagh's idea have laid out the many implications of changing course now that plans and projects have proceeded with the assumption the future suburb is a go.
During deliberations in 2021 about expanding Ottawa's urban boundary, the previous city council voted to allow rural lands owned by Algonquins of Ontario Realty Corp. and Taggart Group to be developed to house up to 45,000 people.

Canadian PM Mark Carney has said Canada is "not for sale" as US President Donald Trump insists the country would benefit from becoming the 51st US state.
Relations between the once close allies have been frayed in the wake of Trump's new tariff regime, as well as the comments, but the US president added that Canada's opposition to his proposal will not impact today's discussions.

Edmonton Oilers set playoff comeback record with Game 1 win vs. Golden Knights
One thing is becoming clear during this year's NHL playoffs: Don't count out the Edmonton Oilers.
They rallied from a 2-0 series deficit to oust Los Angeles in six games in the first round. Then they opened the second round Tuesday night by setting a league record with their fifth consecutive playoff comeback victory in a single post-season.
Zach Hyman scored from just above the right circle with 3:02 left in the third period to put Edmonton ahead for good in its 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights after falling behind 2-0.

PSB says it connected Craswell incidents in P.E.I. schools only after his 1st arrest
P.E.I.'s Public Schools Branch director Tracy Beaulieu said the organization only linked two prior classroom incidents involving Matthew Alan Craswell after his 2023 arrest on unrelated child pornography charges. Craswell, a former substitute teacher, recently pleaded guilty to sexual touching and child pornography offenses. Beaulieu stated that after his arrest, they reviewed records and found a past investigation from April 2024, prompting them to notify police. She emphasized Craswell's move to high schools was due to his training, not complaints.

Ottawa police expand special constable program
Ottawa police have expanded their use of special constables โ unarmed peace officers with nearly all the training of a patrol officer but without the option to use lethal force โ to take some of the workload off an overburdened front line.
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) launched a pilot in March 2024, with four special constables assigned to assist half of the patrol platoons in the west and central divisions respond to non-emergency calls. They deployed in marked special constable cruisers, and were dispatched by the police communications centre or assigned by supervising officers.

Fear turned to shock when murder accused realized he'd shot an officer, court hears
When two Ontario Provincial Police officers walked into Alain Bellefeuille's house, one calling his name and announcing they were police, Bellefeuille never heard it, he testified at his murder trial Thursday.
"If I knew they were police, I would've been relieved," he said in French of the events that took place May 11, 2023, in Bourget, Ont.
"I would've been confused, but I wouldn't have taken them to be a threat."
Instead he was panicked, he said, and his heartbeat was ringing in his ears. Someone was in his house at 2:30 a.m., he saw they were holding something metallic that looked like a handgun, and he thought he might die.
His response, he said, was to start firing the high-calibre, semi-automatic sport shooting rifle he kept at the foot of his bed in violation of gun safety regulations.

A gathering led by Filipino groups at McMaster University is aiming to honour the 11 people killed in Vancouver during the Lapu-Lapu Day event last month.
