Kingston Police's use of a drone to catch distracted drivers stirs backlash
Drivers at three busy intersections in Kingston, Ont., had no way of knowing they were being watched earlier this month, but high above them police hovered, zooming in to catch those using their phones while behind the wheel. By the end of the day on May 7, officers had handed out 20 tickets for distracted driving — each alleged violation captured on video by a drone flying overhead.
It was the first time Kingston Police had used the tactic, and as residents heard what was going on, debate began to swell on social media between those who felt it had crossed a line and others who believed a novel approach was needed.

NDP holds Nunavut after Elections Canada validates results
After a delay due to a blizzard, Elections Canada has validated the results in Nunavut and confirmed NDP incumbent Lori Idlout has prevailed over Liberal challenger Kilikvak Kabloona.
The results were posted on Elections Canada's website Friday evening. Validation is a procedure in which Elections Canada double-checks and verifies the numbers reported on election night.
It took more than two weeks for Elections Canada to validate the results because the final ballot box from the community of Naujaat was delayed. It was sent to Iqaluit but got stuck at the airline cargo facility in Rankin Inlet when a rare late-spring blizzard hit Iqaluit on Thursday.

Liberals will table a budget this fall, Prime Minister Mark Carney says
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday morning in Rome that his Liberal government will table a budget this fall — a decision he argued is the right one because there's "not much value" in rushing out a budget at the earliest opportunity.
"We will have a much more comprehensive, effective, ambitious, prudent budget in the fall," Carney said at a media conference in Rome, where world leaders have gathered to commemorate Pope Leo XIV's inaugural mass. "You do these things right and that's what we're going to do."

Canada needs more homes. Prefabricated houses could fill the void
Terra Page's new house was the talk of her Toronto neighbourhood. That makes sense, since it was delivered on a truck.
"It was like watching a really cool giant Lego box being assembled," Page told Cost of Living.
When Page found tree roots growing in the pipes of their 100-year-old house, Page and her family decided their best move would be to demolish the house and build anew. That's when their contractor suggested a "prefab" house — one that would be built off-site, then shipped to the lot.

Eco-friendly transportation a condition of planned Ottawa Senators arena
Public transit, cycling and walking will be the "primary and preferred modes" of getting fans to and from the Ottawa Senators' planned downtown arena, says a newly disclosed agreement on the project.
Under the agreement, a group led by the NHL team would be responsible for designing, building and paying for a publicly accessible cycling and pedestrian bridge linking a major Ottawa street to the LeBreton Flats arena site. In addition, the arena and associated elements would be "zero carbon" buildings — highly energy-efficient structures with minimal greenhouse gas emissions from materials and operations.

Fire forces Puvirnituq, Que., to declare state of emergency as water shortage continues
As residents of Puvirnituq, Que., continue to struggle with a worsening water shortage, a fire has prompted the small village in Nunavik to declare a state of emergency. The fire, which began on Saturday at about 3 p.m., destroyed a house in the northern Quebec village of 2,100 people.
There were no injuries, according to a statement from Lucy Qalingo, Puvirnituq's mayor. She said the fire was extinguished at about midnight, with blizzard conditions, strong winds and the very limited water supply hampering the firefighting efforts. The village council declared a state of emergency on Saturday evening. Access to water has been limited since a pipe that connects the pump station to the treatment plant froze in mid-March. That has forced the village to drive farther out of town to truck in water and have it manually chlorinated, slowing delivery of water.

Alberta doctors renew calls for RSV shot for all newborns, after hundreds hospitalized
The Alberta government faced calls to offer nirsevimab, a newer preventative injection, for free to all newborns last year. Despite being offered in some other provinces, it was not available in Alberta. The monoclonal antibody shot, which was approved by Health Canada in 2023 and is given in a single dose, contains lab-made proteins that act like those created by the body's own immune system.
In response to questions from CBC News last week, Alberta Health confirmed it now plans to offer limited coverage starting this fall.
"For the 2025-26 season, the Alberta Pediatric RSV Prevention Program will offer nirsevimab (Beyfortus) to high-risk infants," an Alberta Health official said in an emailed statement.
