Up to 300 people evacuated from Vancouver Island campground for rapidly-growing wildfire
An aggressive wildfire detected Monday night has forced up to 300 people to flee a campground near Port Alberni, B.C. The China Creek Campground and Marina southwest of the Vancouver Island city was evacuated due to the Mount Underwood fire, which grew quickly from around 50 hectares in size around 7 p.m. to 150 hectares by 9 p.m. Around 10 p.m., it had ballooned in size even further to 630 hectares.
In an update late Monday night, the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) said the blaze was displaying Rank 4 and Rank 5 fire behaviour β meaning it was an extremely vigorous surface fire and burning to the tops of trees.

N.L. premier to give wildfire update as 'troublesome day' expected fighting Paddy's Pond fire
Five wildfires are burning out of control in Newfoundland and Labrador, including a 200-hectare blaze near Paddyβs Pond that has prompted evacuation orders for a nearby industrial area and alerts for parts of Paradise and Conception Bay South. Crews are battling the fire with aerial support and ground teams, but dry conditions and no rain in the forecast mean βextreme fire behaviourβ is expected. The Kingston fire has also expanded into Ochre Pit Cove, with fire guards being built to contain it. In total, eight fires are active across the province, forcing thousands to evacuate and leaving many others on alert.

China Imposes 75.8% Provisional Duty on Canadian Canola
China has announced a provisional anti-dumping duty of 75.8% on Canadian canola imports, effective this Thursday. The move stems from a probe initiated in September 2024, in response to Canadaβs tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. As China is the worldβs largest importer of canolaβprimarily sourced from Canadaβthe hefty duty could effectively shut out Canadian exports. Futures for canola plummeted following the announcement. Australia may benefit from this shift, though analysts say itβs unlikely to fully replace Canadaβs market share.

A Vancouver Island wildfire continues to grow out of control Wednesday. The Mount Underwood fire jumped to 20.36 square kilometres (2,036 hectares) Wednesday morning, and is burning more than 10 kilometres south of Port Alberni, B.C., a small city home to about 19,000 people.
More than 500 properties in the Bamfield and Anacla areas are still without power due to the blaze, according to B.C. Hydro's outage list. Those properties haven't had power since around 6 p.m. PT Monday. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) has said the power is expected to be out for longer than 72 hours. Evacuation orders have been issued by the ACRD and Cowichan Valley Regional District for a mix of commercial, industrial and recreational properties.

Halifax wildfire was human-caused, N.S. government confirms
Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources confirmed on Wednesday that a wildfire near a Halifax business park was human-caused.
During a news conference, manager of forest protection Scott Tingley said crews found an open fire when they arrived on scene on Tuesday afternoon, but whoever started the fire wasn't around.
"That makes it impossible to hold the person or people responsible to account. And yeah, that's frustrating to everyone," Tingley told reporters.

Alleged illegal jet ski crossing into U.S. exposes 'blind spot' in border security: CBSA's union
A man who allegedly crossed from Canada to the U.S. on a rented jet ski remains missing, highlighting concerns over gaps in Canadaβs border security. The Sea-Doo, rented in southwestern Ontario, was found on the Michigan shore, but the suspect is still at large. Officials, including MP Marilyn Gladu and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, say the border is understaffed and lacks adequate RCMP presence, leaving βporousβ areas vulnerable. Ford stressed that border patrol should be a federal responsibility, not municipal or provincial, while Ottawa has introduced the Strong Borders Act and a $1.3 billion security plan. However, the CBSA union says resources have yet to materialize, and coordination between CBSA and RCMP remains a βblind spotβ in handling crossings between ports of entry.

Poilievre Targets EV Mandate as His Next Fall Campaign Focus
Pierre Poilievre, stepping away from his previous fight against the carbon tax, is now gearing up for a national campaign to scrap Canadaβs electric vehicle (EV) sales mandate. Labeling it the βCarney tax,β he argues that the requirement for 20% of light-duty vehicle sales to be zero-emission vehicles next year imposes undue costs on manufacturers and consumers, especially amid U.S. tariffs and the end of government incentives.

Man charged for 'surfing' atop moving train near Alexandria
A man is facing charges for allegedly climbing atop a moving Via Rail train in eastern Ontario earlier this week, in what police are calling an incident of "train surfing."
On Wednesday at about 3 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers for the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry area responded to a train stopped on the tracks northwest of Alexandria, Ont., a town located about 100 kilometres east of Ottawa. The train had departed from Montreal and was headed to Ottawa. Passengers who later spoke to CBC Ottawa said the train was stopped in the middle of the woods while en route. Police eventually came to apprehend the man, ultimately delaying the train for hours.
