Rideau Valley water supply under pressure from hot, dry weather
The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) is urging residents and businesses to reduce water use in a major low water level advisory issued for the watershed.
On Tuesday the conservation authority issued a level three advisory, which means there is a failure of the water supply to meet demand. It is triggered when rainfall deficits fall below 40 per cent of the long-term average. It adds that 22 days with temperatures over 30 C have further contributed to drought impacts.

Air Canada, flight attendants reach tentative deal to end strike
A tentative agreement has been reached to end the contract dispute between Air Canada and its flight attendants, both the airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced Tuesday.
CUPE, which represents more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants, said that after nine hours of talks with the assistance of the chief mediator appointed by the federal government, the deal struck will be presented to its membership, who will have an opportunity to ratify it. The union gave few details on the agreement but said it guarantees ground pay for its members — something that's been a major sticking point in talks so far.

Education minister open to eliminating Ontario school trustees
Ontario's education minister says the way schools are governed in the province is "outdated" and that, as he pursues a review, he's open eliminating elected trustees altogether.
Already, Paul Calandra has appointed supervisors who have taken over five of Ontario's biggest school boards. Trustees have been shut out of their accounts, and those appointees have been tasked with making decisions to improve boards' financial situations and avoid deficits.

Federal government taps Cohere to work on use of AI in public service
The federal government has signed an agreement with a Canadian artificial intelligence company to identify areas where AI can enhance public service operations. Cohere will look at how its products can improve federal public services, said Sofia Ouslis, a spokesperson for Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon.
The agreement sets up "early-stage collaboration" between the federal government and the Toronto-based tech company, she said. Cohere develops large language models, a type of generative AI focused on language, and the company specializes in AI services for businesses.

Trail of destruction in Brooks, Alta., after golf ball-sized hailstorm rips through
What started as a warm, sunny day in Brooks, Alta., on Wednesday quickly took a turn when a nasty hailstorm ripped through, crumpling and knocking over power lines and damaging cars, homes and crops.
"All of a sudden, the winds came up, and it came in quick," said Brooks Mayor John Petrie.
He said he watched from inside his house as "golf ball-sized" hail rained down, shredding leaves and perforating the siding on some of his neighbours' homes in the city that's about 160 kilometres southeast of Calgary.

Mayor asks council to limit next year's tax increase to 3.75%
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is looking to hold any property tax increase next year to 3.75 per cent, as he prepares to go to city councillors with his high-level budget asks to fund "critical areas" like policing and transit.
That number is only a target, an upper limit meant to guide city staff as they draw up a detailed draft budget over the coming months. It comes as part of the 2026 budget directions report released Thursday. The report lays out the cost pressures facing the city and how much money it will have to raise to cover them.

Police chief says force needs budget boost, but critics disagree
Ottawa's police chief hopes the mayor's budget plan will help his force keep up with mounting demands, even as some community groups say it's wrongheaded to boost police funding while shortchanging other pressing needs.
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe revealed proposed budget directions on Thursday that could add roughly $30 million to the police budget. Though the pitch comes early in the budgeting process, it aims to boost a levy that funds the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) by at least 2.9 per cent, and perhaps as much as 6.5 per cent.
