'Relationship building' major impetus for end of hybrid work, city manager says

Ottawa's city manager says improving workplace culture was the key driver behind a decision to end hybrid work for municipal employees, amid criticism from the union and some city councillors who say the decision was "politically motived."

City manager Wendy Stephanson announced the move Tuesday in a memo to Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and council. The change will require all municipal employees to work five days a week in the office as of Jan. 1, 2026. It comes a week after Premier Doug Ford ordered provincial government workers back to the office full-time by January, and encouraged municipalities to do the same.

Quebec Considers Banning Public Prayer to Strengthen Secularism

Quebec Premier François Legault is exploring legislation that could prohibit public prayer in spaces like parks and streets—a move seen as bolstering the province’s secularism laws including Bill 21. He even raised the possibility of invoking the notwithstanding clause to bypass constitutional challenges. The proposal has sparked strong opposition: Catholic bishops warn it infringes on fundamental freedoms, legal experts say it’s unconstitutional, and critics argue that banning public prayer risks marginalizing religious communities and undermining civil rights.

Quebec plans to table bill banning prayer in public

Quebec’s government plans to introduce a bill this fall banning public prayer as part of its broader push to reinforce secularism, Secularism Minister Jean-François Roberge announced. Premier François Legault said street or park prayers should not be allowed, framing the move as a clear message to Islamists. While details of the legislation are unclear, Legault has not ruled out invoking the notwithstanding clause. The move follows other secularism measures, including expanding the religious symbols law, amid declining poll numbers and recent electoral setbacks for Legault’s Coalition Avenir Québec government.

Zellers returns — again — this time starting in Edmonton

A new incarnation of Zellers is set to open in Edmonton's Londonderry Mall, after the defunct Hudson's Bay Company transferred the discount retailer's brand trademarks to the owner of Fairweather and International Clothiers, according to federal registries.

Per the operator of the north Edmonton shopping centre, the former Hudson's Bay location will be opening as a Zellers with a soft launch on Friday, Aug. 29.

"It's going to be about 60,000 square feet," said landlord Henry Zavriyev in an interview with CBC News from Montreal.

"It'll be the first Zellers opening in Canada."

Zavriyev said his understanding is the store will sell household goods, along with clothing for men, women and children.

'Vicious compliance': Alberta premier decries Edmonton Public Schools' banned book list

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith slammed the Edmonton Public School Board Friday morning for its banned book list, which features more than 200 titles.

The internally distributed list, which CBC News obtained Thursday, was in response to a provincial government directive to identify books that are not age-appropriate and remove them from school library shelves. But the list included titles like The Handmaid's Tale, The Color Purple, The Godfather and Jaws. Books from authors like George R. R. Martin, Sarah J. Maas and Maya Angelou are also on the list.

Poilievre calls for more legal protection for Canadians defending homes from intruders

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is urging the federal government to amend the Criminal Code to adopt his "Stand on Guard" principle, which would presume the use of force reasonable against intruders who pose a threat inside a home. He argues current laws burden victims with complex legal conditions, treating them like criminals, and vowed that if the government doesn’t act, Conservatives will introduce the measure through a private member’s bill.

B.C. billionaire wanting Bay leases doesn't have cash to launch new chain: landlord

Hudson's Bay landlords were back in court Friday arguing a B.C. billionaire doesn't have the cash needed to launch a new retailer.

Ruby Liu wants to buy 25 more leases for $69.1 million from the Bay to open a new department store named after herself. The court has already approved a separate purchase of three Bay leases in malls she owns for a total of $6 million.

The Bay wants to sell her the leases because it will help the retailer repay some of the roughly $1 billion it owes creditors. It says the larger Liu deal is the "last path to realizing any value for the company's 98 leases."

Hudson's Bay has argued that Liu has the money she will need to launch and run a department store. The retailer has accused the landlords of painting her business plan and experience as insufficient because it's in their financial interest for the leases to revert back to them.

10,000 Ontario college support workers in strike position as students head back

As post-secondary students get ready for the upcoming semester, support workers from all of Ontario's 24 colleges are preparing for a potential strike.

On Aug. 21, the bargaining team representing over 10,000 full-time college support workers, including librarians, bookstore and registrar employees, requested a no board report, a measure that puts workers in a legal strike position as early as Sept. 11. The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and the College Employer Council (CEC) have been negotiating the contracts, which are set to expire on Sept. 1, since June. The two sides told CBC Toronto that they are in negotiations again this weekend.

B.C. hikers break Guinness World Record at Cypress Mountain

More than 1,500 hikers celebrated winning a Guinness World Record for most people hiking simultaneously at Cypress Mountain Saturday in West Vancouver, B.C.

Tina Shi, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, announced that 1,560 participants broke the previous record of 815 hikers. Shi told CBC News that official stewards counted participants in different areas to make sure no one stopped hiking, which could have disqualified the event. She noted the record is specifically for hiking together and not about getting to the top.

Trail and Muskeg wildfires flare up in Labour Day long weekend prompting evacuations in northern Sask.

Two major wildfires in Saskatchewan—the Muskeg and Trail fires—flared up over the weekend, forcing evacuations near Île-à-la-Crosse. Campers at South Bay War Veterans Park and residents of the Canoe River subdivision were asked to leave, while fire breached Highway 155 and closed parts of it, though it later reopened with low visibility warnings. Highway 165 remains closed after fire crossed the road. Crews are focusing efforts on protecting key areas near Beauval, Pinehouse junction, and south of Patuanak as extreme heat and winds fuel the blazes.
