B.C. hikers break Guinness World Record at Cypress Mountain

More than 1,500 hikers celebrated winning a Guinness World Record for most people hiking simultaneously at Cypress Mountain Saturday in West Vancouver, B.C.

Tina Shi, official adjudicator for Guinness World Records, announced that 1,560 participants broke the previous record of 815 hikers. Shi told CBC News that official stewards counted participants in different areas to make sure no one stopped hiking, which could have disqualified the event. She noted the record is specifically for hiking together and not about getting to the top.

Trail and Muskeg wildfires flare up in Labour Day long weekend prompting evacuations in northern Sask.

Two major wildfires in Saskatchewan—the Muskeg and Trail fires—flared up over the weekend, forcing evacuations near Île-à-la-Crosse. Campers at South Bay War Veterans Park and residents of the Canoe River subdivision were asked to leave, while fire breached Highway 155 and closed parts of it, though it later reopened with low visibility warnings. Highway 165 remains closed after fire crossed the road. Crews are focusing efforts on protecting key areas near Beauval, Pinehouse junction, and south of Patuanak as extreme heat and winds fuel the blazes.

Family Retraces Final Steps of Norwegian Hiker with First Nations Who Supported Him

Steffen Skjottelvik’s family has arrived in Winnipeg from Oslo to retrace his final journey in northern Manitoba, honoring the First Nation communities that embraced and aided him during his adventure, and to attend a memorial ceremony before returning his remains to Norway. Steffen had formed deep bonds across remote communities—living by their customs, learning Cree, and surviving on their guidance. When he went missing near York Factory while trekking from Fort Severn, it was these very communities who organized and funded the grassroots search that ultimately located him.

Western Quebec municipalities vote overwhelmingly against graphite mine

People living in five municipalities in western Quebec have overwhelmingly voted against a proposed graphite mine in the area in a referendum held Sunday. B.C.-based Lomiko Metals wanted to mine graphite around Lac Bélanger just west of Duhamel, Que., about 80 kilometres northeast of Gatineau. The area has a combined population of nearly 6,000.

The municipalities of Duhamel and Lac-Simon showed the strongest opposition this weekend, with 98 per cent of voters casting ballots against the project. In the municipalities of Lac-des-Plages, St-Émile-de-Suffolk, and Chénéville, more than 90 per cent of voters also said no to the mine.

Canadians Report Never Reaching CRA Agents as Call-Centre Crisis Deepens

Many Canadians say they are no longer able to get through to a live agent at the Canada Revenue Agency—some even reporting “no queue available” options when calling, sparking concerns as staffing cuts loom. Meanwhile, the CRA’s published response methods emphasize automated services: when wait times exceed 30 minutes, calls are redirected, and service agents handle only a fraction of the roughly 253,000 daily calls received—adding to frustrations.

James Bowie gets 4 years imprisonment for threatening ex-client, extortion, harassment

James Bowie — the suspended Ottawa criminal defence lawyer convicted of death threats, criminal harassment and extortion involving an ex-client and a former close friend — was sentenced to four years' imprisonment Tuesday morning for his crimes.

Bowie was also ordered to submit his DNA for a national databank, and is barred from possessing weapons for 10 years after his release. His offences were part of a "desperate" and "unhinged" plot to clear his name, court heard during his trial. They happened after the ex-client, Leanne Aubin, went public in late 2022 with the allegation that Bowie tried to extort her for sex in exchange for his legal services.
