In a memo to daycares obtained by The Canadian Press, Paul Calandra β who first proposed the measures several days ago β says the goal is to "better safeguard" children and child-care providers. Calandra says all parking spaces that are adjacent to daycare entryways, playgrounds, windows and exterior walls of classrooms should be blocked off during hours of operation until additional safety measures are implemented.

Fenil Patel, who was living in Brampton, Ont., was arrested on Sept. 5 following an extradition request from the United States. The charges he's expected to face there include conspiracy to bring aliens to the U.S. resulting in death, court documents obtained by CBC News say.
The update comes nearly four years after the Patel family β no relation to Fenil Patel β died of hypothermia while attempting to cross illegally into Minnesota, near Emerson, Man.

Teardown begins for Hamilton's historic Tivoli Theatre to make way for condos
An excavator ripped through the brick wall of the former Tivoli Theatre this week, leaving a gaping hole in what was once a historic downtown landmark.
Aventus Group, the owner and developer of the property between Hughson and James Streets, says it is not currently demolishing the multi-story building, but rather prepping it for deconstruction to make way for the "Tivoli Condos." "What is currently underway is preparation work, which includes removing interior debris, cleaning out the building and undertaking other measures to ready the site," said Edward John, a principal planner at the firm Landwise, on behalf of the developer.

B.C. coast on tsunami watch after 7.8-magnitude quake off Russia
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula has prompted tsunami risk assessments for coastal British Columbia. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center said danger levels are still being evaluated, with an advisory already issued for Alaskaβs Aleutian Islands and Amchitka Pass. Officials say itβs too early to know if Hawaii is at risk. The quake, which struck at 11:58 a.m. PT, comes just weeks after an 8.8-magnitude quake in the same region triggered a tsunami advisory for much of B.C.βs coast.

Alberta ban on police 'carding' expires, but government says practice still outlawed
The Alberta government has chosen not to renew a regulation banning the practice of "carding" by police officers, but the province says the practice is still prohibited under other laws.
The provincial regulation enforcing the ban was due for renewal this past summer, but a government letter to the Alberta Association of Police Governance and shared by the Edmonton police commission says the province wouldn't be renewing it.
Carding refers to police officers stopping members of the public without reason and asking for identification.
