Canada Post denies Ottawa's reforms give it leverage over striking union in negotiations
Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers remain locked in a nationwide strike after Ottawa ordered the postal service to end home delivery and close rural outlets as part of a cost-cutting plan to address a projected $1.5 billion loss in 2025. Canada Post says the reforms donβt give it leverage in talks but is revising its contract offer. The federal government has given the corporation 45 days to present a savings plan, with full transition to community mailboxes expected to take about a decade.

Union president not worried about Rio Tinto's low-carbon processing half a world away
As metals giant Rio Tinto kicks off a restructuring process at its Labrador City iron ore mine, the union president says he doesn't expect to be hit hard by the company's work to develop its low-carbon iron-making process halfway across the world.
Labrador is a major producer of iron ore and nickel, which are major components in steel manufacturing. The region is also known for the high-grade iron ore pellets it produces, which is considered less-carbon intensive in the steel-making process.

Alberta teacher strike likely as ATA members vote down tentative agreement
The Alberta Teachers' Association says a provincewide strike will begin on Oct. 6, after its members voted overwhelmingly against a recent tentative deal with the province.
The union represents 51,000 public, Catholic and francophone teachers. Of 43,362 votes cast, 89.5 per cent were opposed to the deal and 10.5 per cent supported it.
"I'm not surprised," ATA president Jason Schilling said at a news conference held in Edmonton Monday evening. "Teachers in this province have been asked to do more with less time and time again."

India-based Bishnoi gang now listed as terrorist entity in Canada
The federal government has listed the India-based Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization in Canada. The group was accused by the RCMP last year of orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation against Sikh activists in Canada. The new designation allows authorities to seize property and freeze accounts, and also bars Canadians from financing or aiding the group.
The move comes as Canada and India work to gradually re-establish trust in their diplomatic relations, after nearly two years of strain.

The government also launched an online learning βtool kitβ for parents and pledged to hire 1,500 educational assistants by 2028. Winnipeg police officer pleads guilty to stealing iPad, iPhone from evidence
A veteran Winnipeg officer has pleaded guilty to stealing electronics from police evidence last year, including an iPad that was supposed to be returned to the victim of a robbery.
Const. Jeffrey Conrad was charged following an investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service professional standards unit, which began after officers discovered items missing from evidence control, police said in a news release in September 2024. Those items included an iPad that had been stolen from a 37-year-old woman during a robbery in January, then recovered by officers through routine checks of transactions at Winnipeg pawn shops.
