Home affordability improves sharply in Canada's most expensive cities: Budget watchdog
Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Officer reported that housing affordability has improved nationally, with the gap between home prices and household affordability shrinking from 80% in Sept. 2023 to 34% in Aug. 2025. Lower interest rates, stronger wages, and cooler home prices drove the gains. Toronto and Hamilton saw the biggest improvements, though homes remain costly. Halifax has the widest affordability gap (74%), while Edmonton has the smallest (4%). Calgary, Montreal, and Quebec City saw affordability worsen, though mortgage costs remain relatively low. Debt service ratios show affordability is back near 2019 levels, but households in Toronto, Vancouver, and Victoria remain more financially vulnerable.

Teen accused in Ottawa anti-Jewish terror plot gets bail under strict conditions
A now 17-year-old accused alongside another teen of plotting to violently attack Jewish people in Ottawa has been granted bail under strict conditions ahead of his trial next year. He was 15 when he was arrested and charged with terrorism offences in February 2024 by INSET, an RCMP-led team of law enforcement and intelligence partners that handles threats to national security.
It's alleged that in the fall of 2023, he conspired with another 15-year-old boy "to violently attack Jewish persons in Ottawa, possibly through the detonation of an explosive device at a pro-Israel rally at Parliament Hill," according to Federal Court documents connected to the case, among other charges.

22 municipal leaders sign letter urging Ford to reconsider plans for Ontario speed camera ban
Twenty-two Ontario municipal leaders urged Premier Doug Ford to reconsider his plan to ban automated speed enforcement (ASE), particularly in school zones. In a joint letter, they warned a ban would undo years of safety progress, strain police resources, raise enforcement costs, and endanger children. The mayors proposed compromises, such as warning tickets for first offenses, reasonable speed thresholds, school-hour operation only, and directing fine revenue to traffic calming projects. If a full ban proceeds, they demanded provincial reimbursement for program cancellation costs.

Federal budget watchdog's comments are 'just wrong,' says one of his predecessors
A former parliamentary budget officer says it is "just wrong" to suggest that the federal finances are unsustainable and is publicly disagreeing with the current fiscal watchdog.
Kevin Page — who was Canada's first parliamentary budget officer (PBO) starting in 2008 — told CBC's Power & Politics that he disagrees with the language of the current PBO, Jason Jacques.
"I think the language from the current parliamentary budget officer, Mr. Jason Jacques, is just wrong and he should walk that back, quite frankly," Page told host David Cochrane.

Canada Post takes signing bonus off the table in latest offer to union
Canada Post's latest offer to the union representing 55,000 striking postal workers includes a number of measures from its last offer — while removing a signing bonus the corporation says it can no longer afford.
"Due to the company's deteriorating financial situation, a signing bonus for employees is no longer on the table," Canada Post said in a statement Friday. This new offer will "enable the company's modernization" while "maintaining good jobs and benefits for employees over the long term," it said.

Tyra the Tyrannosaurus on the ballot in Drumheller, Alta.
AJ Frey, the businessman who launched a 25,000-signature petition to save Drumheller’s giant dinosaur statue “Tyra,” is running for town council and making the attraction a campaign issue. Tyra’s future is uncertain pending an engineering study on refurbishment costs, after the Chamber of Commerce announced plans to dismantle her in 2029. The statue, a major tourist draw for 25 years, has become a focal point in the Oct. 20 civic election. Chamber president and mayoral candidate Lana Phillips acknowledged Tyra’s importance but stressed broader community issues. Outgoing Mayor Heather Colberg said she remains committed to saving the landmark despite leaving office before the report’s release.

Thousands rally at Alberta Legislature for public education as teachers' strike looms
Thousands rallied at the Alberta Legislature on Sunday in support of public education as the province faces a possible historic teachers’ strike. The Alberta Teachers' Association and the provincial government remain deadlocked over salaries, class sizes, and staffing, after their contract expired in August. If no deal is reached, 51,000 teachers will strike Monday — the first provincewide walkout in Alberta’s history. Premier Danielle Smith urged the union to call off the strike, calling it a “lose-lose-lose situation,” while the government said it remains ready to resume negotiations.

Thousands in Calgary, Edmonton rally for public education as Alberta teachers' strike looms
More than 20,000 Albertans assembled in the province's two largest cities Sunday, with many holding flags or picket signs as they chanted for greater government support for public education.
The rallies come a day before Alberta's 51,000 teachers are set to strike. If the teachers' union and provincial government are unable to reach an eleventh-hour deal, Monday will mark the first provincewide teachers' strike in Alberta history.
"Public education is a foundation of a strong democratic society," Heather Quinn, president of ATA Local 37, which represents Edmonton public school teachers, said during a speech on the Legislature's steps.
