Passport service cuts target minorities and people with disabilities, union says
Public servants who are from diverse backgrounds, have disabilities or are involved in union activities are being disproportionately targeted by cuts to the passport service, according to the Union of National Employees (UNE).
The union filed two grievances challenging a process it considers to be discriminatory and in violation of the collective agreement and the Canadian Human Rights Act. In May, 800 contract employees across the country β but concentrated in Quebec β were told they would no longer have their jobs in June. Of these, 350 felt aggrieved and are contesting their terminations through an action started by the UNE.

Teachers' strike risks putting strain on Alberta economy, business leaders warn
With Alberta teachers on strike as of Monday and more than 730,000 K-12 students across the province out of school for the foreseeable future, many parents and business owners are struggling to cope.
Deborah Yedlin, president and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, said families having to contend with cancelled classes could have significant implications for the provincial economy. "When we talk about economic productivity, this is also a strain on Alberta's economy, because if parents are distracted, if they can't do what they need to do from a working standpoint, that's not good from an economic standpoint either," she said.

It's 'full steam ahead' for the F-35 program until told otherwise, defence official says
Canada is proceeding "full steam ahead" on the F-35 fighter program until it hears otherwise, a top Department of National Defence official has told a House of Commons committee.
Deputy Defence Minister Stefani Beck testified before the tri-party public accounts committee on Tuesday, which is studying the latest auditor general's report on the increased cost of acquiring the stealth jet.
Last spring, shortly after coming to power, Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of the $27.7 billion purchase from U.S. defence giant Lockheed Martin.

Via Rail pays out $31M in travel vouchers because of delays
hundreds of thousands of passengers whose trains were more than one hour late since last fall, mostly as a result of new speed limits at rail crossings on CN tracks. Travel vouchers worth 50 per cent of fares are offered to passengers whenever a train is delayed by more than an hour on the Quebec City-Windsor corridor, the busiest stretch in Via's system. The value goes up to 100 per cent when the delay exceeds four hours.
The $31-million figure is equivalent to seven per cent of the Crown corporation's total revenues in 2024, illustrating the extent of the problems experienced by passengers who have suffered record delays since the start of a conflict with CN during last year's Thanksgiving weekend.

Peter Nygard's charges stayed in Winnipeg sexual assault case
A Winnipeg judge dropped all sexual assault and confinement charges against fashion mogul Peter Nygard, ruling his right to a fair trial was violated because police failed to keep records from a 1993 investigation. The complainant, April Telek, had accused Nygard of assaulting her in his Winnipeg warehouse, but missing police notes made a fair trial impossible. Nygard, currently jailed in Ontario for another case, expressed happiness at the decision.

Cadaver dogs' search for Lilly and Jack Sullivan didn't find human remains
Dogs specially trained to pick up the scent of human remains did not find two children who have been missing from rural Nova Scotia for more than five months, RCMP announced Wednesday as they renewed calls for information in the disappearance of Lilly and Jack Sullivan.
Lilly, 6, and Jack, 4, were reported missing on May 2, when police received a 911 call from their mother saying they had wandered away from their home in Lansdowne, a sparsely populated community in Pictou County about 140 kilometres northeast of Halifax.
Staff Sgt. Rob McCamon said two dog teams that travelled from British Columbia searched a total of 40 kilometres over three days in late September.
