⚠️ IRCC is actively investigating study permit files, and students entered through one stream are in the spotlight.

IRCC has confirmed it placed more than 1,274 information alerts on immigration files as part of a compliance push targeting higher risk study permits and letter of acceptance fraud, with case reviews running through September 2026 and new misrepresentation instructions being published. Former Student Direct Stream entrants face the heaviest scrutiny.

If an agent handled your documents, check what was actually submitted in your name.

🇬🇧 A new Canadian work permit route opened on 1 September, and IRCC's own public tool still does not show it.

British citizens can now access LMIA exempt work permits under CPTPP exemption code T52 in fields including engineering, technology, finance, business, marketing and science, after the UK joined the CPTPP on 1 September 2026. Officer instructions were updated on 2 September, but IRCC's public self help tool still does not list CPTPP for the UK.

You still need a job offer and the right credentials.

🖥️ Canada is rebuilding the machine that runs Express Entry, and nobody knows when it lands.

IRCC says the first release of its new case management platform will deliver a new Expression of Interest system for Express Entry, as part of its Digital Platform Modernization programme. No launch date has been given, and no CRS changes have been announced as part of it, though IRCC consulted separately in 2026 on reforming the federal high skilled programs.

System migrations historically slow processing before they speed it up.

📢 A quiet increase just made studying in Canada more expensive to prove.

Since 1 September 2026, a single study permit applicant outside Quebec must show at least $23,448 for living costs, up $553 from $22,895.

That is on top of tuition and travel. Applications submitted before 1 September were assessed at the old figure.

If you are preparing a study permit file, check your funds against the new number today.

⚠️ A quiet enforcement step is scheduled to reach some study permit extensions this month.

IRCC's action plan set September 2026 as the launch for compliance investigations into extensions it flags as higher risk, and its planning documents point to cases first processed under the Student Direct Stream, which closed on 8 November 2024.

It does not mean every extension is investigated. If your first permit came through that stream, keep your documents ready.

💬 Here is a number most Express Entry candidates never see.

As of 13 September 2026, there were 226,793 active profiles in the Express Entry pool, up by just 120 from the previous report.

If yours is one of them, you are competing in a very crowded room while you wait for the next draw.

How long has your profile been sitting there?

📢 A quiet update to IRCC's processing times page could change how you plan your next move.

Work permit extension applicants and first time PGWP applicants can now see an estimated wait in weeks based on the date they applied, plus how many applicants are ahead of them.

The page lists 202,900 applicants awaiting decisions as of 26 September 2026.

If your permit is close to expiring, check your own estimate today.

💬 476. That was the cut off score in Canada's Trades draw on 1 October, when 3,500 candidates were invited to apply for PR.

Two days earlier, the Canadian Experience Class draw on 29 September needed 518. If you work in a skilled trade, your category may be doing more for you than your CRS score.

Do you know which Express Entry category your profile fits?

📊 One number shows who Canada's Express Entry system is built for in 2026.

Of 135,215 invitations issued this year, 105,750 went to Canadian Experience Class and French language draws combined, about 78 percent. Provincial nominee draws account for just 9,270. If you have no Canadian work experience and no French, your path may be harder than the headlines suggest.

Plan your category before you plan your move.

🗳️ A temporary Canadian measure has a countdown most nominees do not know about.

Since 9 June, applicants for PR through the base Provincial Nominee Program can apply for a bridging open work permit months sooner, without first receiving an acknowledgement of receipt of their PR application. It stays in place only until 31 December 2026.

📢 A quiet update on 9 October changed where Canadian employers can hire through the low wage LMIA stream.

Only 11 metro areas now have unemployment below 6 percent, down from 15 in July. Alberta and Saskatchewan have none, and Thunder Bay is the only Ontario area left. The new rates apply until 7 January 2027.

If your job offer is in a blocked city, ask your employer now whether it is still eligible.

⚠️ A sudden jump in your bank balance can be read as dishonesty by a Canadian officer. On 1 October the Federal Court set aside a spousal open work permit and study permit refusal where the officer thought the account was inflated, but never sent a procedural fairness letter. A misrepresentation finding can mean a five year ban.

If you have large recent deposits, keep proof of where the money came from.

💬 Three Express Entry categories had received zero draws in 2026 as of 1 October: STEM, education and researchers with Canadian work experience. IRCC does not announce draw dates in advance, so candidates in these fields are left guessing.

If your profile fits one of these categories, are you waiting for a category draw or applying through another route?

📢 Job offer points are coming back to Express Entry, and this time you will not need an LMIA. Announced on 16 October, a qualifying job offer in a high wage occupation can add up to 100 CRS points from 3 November. Job offer points were removed in March 2025, so this is a major reversal.

If you hold a Canadian job offer, check whether it fits before that date arrives.

⚠️ Nobody will add your job offer points for you. IRCC will recalculate work experience scores automatically from 3 November, but you must enter your job offer details in your Express Entry profile yourself, and before that date. Invitation rounds will also pause for up to two weeks while the pool is recalculated.

If you have a job offer, update your profile now and expect a gap in draws.

💬 Only 7 of the 25 trades occupations in Express Entry category draws made IRCC’s new high wage list, compared with 8 of 11 STEM occupations. The list covers 186 occupations in total and starts on 3 November, so your NOC code can decide your extra points.

If you work in a trade, have you checked your code against the list?

📊 Express Entry is about to reward your occupation, not your salary. From 3 November, a job counts as high wage only if its median pay across Canada is at least 1.3 times the national median, based on 2023 to 2025 data. A well paid worker in a lower wage occupation gets nothing extra. Engineers and doctors gain, while general draw cut-offs may rise for everyone else.

If your occupation is not on the list, review category draws and provincial routes.

🗳️ 3 November ends the LMIA as the gatekeeper for Express Entry job offers. Instead, an IRCC officer will decide whether your offer is genuine, checking that the employer actively runs the business, can meet the terms of the offer and follows employment and recruitment laws.

A if officers should judge job offers, or

B if the LMIA should stay.

📢 Express Entry Job Offer Points Return on 3 November

IRCC has announced that qualifying job offers in eligible high-wage occupations can earn 50, 70 or 100 CRS points from 3 November 2026, depending on the occupation's wage level. An LMIA will no longer be required for qualifying job offers used for the new points, but other eligibility rules still apply. Having a job offer does not guarantee an invitation.

Check your occupation and offer against IRCC's official requirements.
