7 Killed in Jordan by gunmen firing on Orthodox funeral procession
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/23/7-killed-in-jordan-by-gunmen-firing-on-orthodox-funeral-procession/

At least seven people were killed by gunmen who opened fire this October 23 at a funeral procession being held at a Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, in the Karak governorate in Jordan. Some three dozen more people were injured. Al Jazeera reported that people heard an explosion when the funeral procession started, and then masked gunmen broke into the church and opened fire for several minutes. Aid to the Church in Need, which supports the Church in Jordan, said prayers were being offered for the dead, the wounded, and their families. ACN said it is in contact with the local Church and is awaiting further information about the circumstances of the attack. The foundation pointed to the long Christian presence in the country. “Jordan is home to historic Christian communities whose presence is an integral part of the country’s religious and cultural heritage,” the statement said. “At this painful moment, we Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/23/7-killed-in-jordan-by-gunmen-firing-on-orthodox-funeral-procession/)

Ukraine, Russia agree to humanitarian ceasefire in war-torn city
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/ukraine-russia-agree-to-humanitarian-ceasefire-in-war-torn-city/

On Friday, October 23, the White House Office of the First Lady announced a temporary humanitarian ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia for the beleaguered city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine. The temporary halt, scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29, and to last for several days, will allow a humanitarian mission to bring much-needed food, water, and medical supplies to the city, which has been under Russian occupation since 2022. It will also facilitate the evacuation of Oleshky citizens to other parts of Ukraine or to Russia if they desire to leave. Pope Leo spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the city last week, while the Holy Father was in the hospital. US First Lady Melania Trump, who first learned of the plight of Oleshky’s citizens during this year’s UN General Assembly meeting in early September, announced that she was personally responsible for brokering the temporary localized truce. “The situation in Oleshky is dire. When the Virgin Mary saved St. Anthony Mary Claret from drowning
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/when-the-virgin-mary-saved-st-anthony-mary-claret-from-drowning/

Many of the saints had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother, calling upon her in their every need, relying on her for protection and help. Not only did they rely on her for their everyday needs, but also when they needed her the most. Such was the case in the life St. Anthony Mary Claret, former Archbishop in Cuba and a man who deeply loved the Virgin Mary. He frequently turned to her in prayer and sometimes cried out to her when in danger. In his autobiography, St. Anthony relates a harrowing experience he had when walking on the seashore: Because I had been working so hard, I didn’t feel very well during the summer. I began to lose all appetite, and the only relief I could find was to go down to the sea, wade in it, and drink a few drops of the salt water. One day as I was walking along Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/when-the-virgin-mary-saved-st-anthony-mary-claret-from-drowning/)

A World Cup trophy for the Virgin Mary
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/a-world-cup-trophy-for-the-virgin-mary/

The World Cup trophy has undoubtedly enjoyed its fair share of champagne showers, victory parades, and enthusiastic kisses from jubilant players, but its latest outing in Spain was definitely a little out of the ordinary. On October 19, the famous golden trophy found itself in the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, where Spain’s national team coach Luis de la Fuente and Royal Spanish Football Federation president Rafael Louzán had come to offer it to the Virgin Mary. After all the excitement — and honor — of conquering the soccer world, they wanted to acknowledge something that doesn’t usually feature in post-match interviews: the importance of faith and gratitude. The ceremony, held exactly three months after Spain’s World Cup triumph and one week after Our Lady’s feast, attracted hundreds of faithful and soccer supporters, while the basilica’s traditional Infanticos choir provided a suitably beautiful soundtrack. As RFEF reported, Louzán explained the Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/a-world-cup-trophy-for-the-virgin-mary/)

Priests’ generosity inspires big donor for New Zealand project
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/priests-generosity-inspires-big-donor-for-new-zealand-project/

In July 2026, the New Zealand Diocese of Christchurch revealed designs for the new Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. The country’s first cathedral to be built from the ground up in more than a century will be raised in place of the 1905 original cathedral. Irreparable damage from earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 necessitated the former church be demolished. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, retired archbishop of New York, is one of the latest figures to give international support for their historic cathedral building project. “I’ll tell you this. You can’t do it by yourself,” he said, speaking from experience. “You need the buy-in of the entire community because the Cathedral arises from the entire community and it’s a sign of Christ the light to the world there in Christchurch… One day I hope to see it…”  In the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, the diocesan priority was the safety of the communities — not just in their Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/priests-generosity-inspires-big-donor-for-new-zealand-project/)

Why the ideology of AI looks so much like religion
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/why-the-ideology-of-ai-looks-so-much-like-religion/

In 2017, Anthony Levandowski — former Google and Uber engineer, later convicted of trade-secret theft — filed paperwork in California to establish a religious organization. Its name was Way of the Future. Its stated purpose was to develop and worship an artificial superintelligence he called “the Godhead.” The church has since dissolved, but the impulse behind it has not. It surfaces in the language used to describe AI’s future, especially in the idea of the uploaded mind as a form of immortality, or even resurrection. Effective altruism, in several of its iterations, functions as a redemption narrative — the faithful calculate and donate in hope of a technologically secured future. The language of sacrifice, mission, and ultimate stakes runs through AI discourse in ways its practitioners rarely pause to examine. The Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor spent several decades building the tools to explain why this was always going to happen. Taylor’s central argument in A Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/why-the-ideology-of-ai-looks-so-much-like-religion/)

Leo XIV warns against “digital solitudes”
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/leo-xiv-warns-against-digital-solitudes/

Speaking to 1,200 educators gathered in Rome for an international congress on school and university ministry, organized under the Dicastery for Culture and Education led by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Pope Leo XIV warned against the “digital solitudes” afflicting young people today — students who walk the corridors of their schools feeling anonymous, crushed under a “culture of performance” that ranks them mercilessly. “A mistaken conception of meritocracy,” he said, “ends up no longer respecting persons.” He also put educators on guard against “false teachers” and “deceptive messages” that promise quick answers, and against what he called “that subtle seduction that makes human thought seem useless precisely at the moment when it is most necessary.” Those words echo something said a quarter century ago by a man who would later become Pope Benedict XVI. In March 2000, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger gave an address in Palermo on fatherhood and the Apocalypse. He was reflecting on Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/leo-xiv-warns-against-digital-solitudes/)

‘Wonder of America’ promises time of grace
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/wonder-of-america-promises-time-of-grace/

“The Wonder of America” is about to celebrate its 500th anniversary. This is the description given to the image of Our Lady left on the cloak of an Indigenous Mexican man in 1531 — Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is also the title of a pastoral letter released on the birthday of the Virgin Mary by the bishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez. Archbishop Gomez fondly recalls visiting Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in his youth, and now, “All these years later, I realize that Our Lady of Guadalupe has gone with me every step of the way of my journey, guiding me, drawing me closer to her Son.” Our Lady of Guadalupe’s picture is shared among many, found in homes and shops and imprinted in the hearts of the people, even if they are not aware of her presence. All the while, she is pointing to her Son. “Mary is the mystery Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/24/wonder-of-america-promises-time-of-grace/)

The first time Mary was invoked as “Queen of Palestine”
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/25/the-first-time-mary-was-invoked-as-queen-of-palestine/

One of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s official titles is “Queen of Heaven and Earth,” a title that is derived from the fact that she was the Mother of the King, and has a special role as the “Queen Mother.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death” (CCC 966). This queenship is not only “general,” over the whole earth, but also “specific,” reigning over each country and region in the world. For this reason, Catholics began invoking her as “Queen of Palestine,” when after World War I the United Kingdom had governance over the Holy Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/25/the-first-time-mary-was-invoked-as-queen-of-palestine/)

Ahead of Halloween, Catholic group’s timely reminder
https://aleteia.org/2026/10/25/ahead-of-halloween-catholic-groups-timely-reminder/

As joyful and exciting as Halloween can be, the holiday can be complicated. For starters, many decorations are downright gruesome, upsetting small children and ruining the fun for families. The same goes for costumes that are overly scary or inappropriate. My family loves Halloween — dressing up as our favorite characters, greeting our neighbors, celebrating with friends and family, and honoring the great Feast of All Saints the next day.  But when some neighborhood Halloween decorations have my kids covering their eyes in fright when we walk past them, or even walking another route to avoid them? That feels like a bridge too far for me. What’s a Catholic mom to do?  I’ll share with you two helpful things that have helped my own family keep a level course as we celebrate this holiday.  The most important part of celebrating Halloween is remembering its real purpose: honoring All Saints’ Day on November 1. Its very Read More… (https://aleteia.org/2026/10/25/ahead-of-halloween-catholic-groups-timely-reminder/)
