One of the largest tech corporations in the world is being sued by Russia for an unimaginable amount of money. According to reports, Google owes the Kremlin more than 2 undecillion rubles, which is a 2 followed by 36 zeroes, because it has refused to pay fines that are currently being accumulated for removing YouTube channels that support Russia. $20 decillion, or roughly $20 billion trillion trillion, is the essentially incalculable punishment. The size of the world economy is dwarfed by that.
Two years later, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be appointed as India's new Chief Justice. He will take over for CJI Chandrachud on November 10, one day after the latter's retirement.
In a landmark ruling on November 5, the Supreme Court clarified the scope of Article 39(b) under the Directive Principles of State Policy, which calls for equitable distribution of "material resources of the community." In an 8:1 majority decision, the Court affirmed that not all private properties fall under this mandate, thereby limiting the State's power to seize or redistribute private assets.

Article 39(b) directs the State to allocate resources to benefit the general welfare. However, the Court highlighted that "material resources of the community" do not automatically include all private property. Specifically, private properties not essential for public welfare or the common good are protected from arbitrary state action. This ruling is significant, as it underscores the need to balance social justice goals with respect for private property rights, reinforcing that only resources contributing to communal benefit fall within the ambit of Article 39(b).
