China's Central Bank Eyes Crypto as Possible Yuan Risk

China's central bank has said cryptocurrencies will be one of its top priorities this year, in an effort to protect the national currency.

According to an announcement Thursday, People's Bank of China (PBoC) has outlined its agenda for the coming year during a conference call focused on monetary development.

While Fan Yifei, the vice governor of the PBoC, praised the ongoing progress on central bank digital currency research and development, he highlighted that one of the three priorities for 2018 will be ensuring the integrity of Chinese yuan.

To that effort, Fan said, the agency will reinforce its regulatory measures both internally and with external parties to "rectify different kinds of cryptocurrencies."

While the remarks didn't disclosed much about its plans for cryptocurrencies going forward, they comes as part of a widened effort taken by the agency in scrutinizing related projects that may undermine financial health in China.

Fan's comments also echo a previous note in early March from the bank's former governor Zhou Xiaochuan, who struck a critical tone towards cryptocurrency speculation and the perceived risks it poses to the country's financial stability.

Additionally, a notice from China's Ministry of Public Security in January in which the agency, which manages the country's police force, said it will take aim at cryptocurrency-related pyramid schemes.

Earlier this month, reports also suggested that the Public Information Network Security Supervision agency under the Ministry of Public Security has been expanding the scope of its internet monitoring to overseas cryptocurrency exchanges that are servicing domestic investors.

In the column wherein the applicant specifies which type of securities are on offer, the document states “Purchase Agreements for Cryptocurrency.”
Why is bitcoin dropping today? Why is BTC falling?
Bitcoin last hit these lows in early February, 2018, dipping just below $6000 before spiking to $12,000, so investors should remain hopeful that history repeats itself.

Cryptocurrencies have been under intense scrutiny this last week amid continuing dissatisfaction in how tech companies such as Facebook secure and distribute user data.

It’s hard to say what the cause of this current crash is outside of a general mistrust in technology.

The biggest crypto coin wasn’t the only one to suffer from the slump, as the whole market endures a bearish trend.

The TRON (TRX) platform is one step closer to its main net, after successfully launching a live testnet. The announcement was made as the TRX market price continued to defy gravity and keep its levels.

TRX settled at around $0.043, down 11% since Thursday’s peak, as most of the positive news around the launch were already discounted and selling started. TRX got close, but did not manage to return as a top 10 coin. TRX climbed only briefly, but slid to position 11 again.
‘Bitcoin Is Dead’

Back in 2010 – just a year after the original crypto was released as open-source software – Tim Harford, the Financial Times columnist known as ‘The Undercover Economist’, discussed “why Bitcoin can’t be a currency”. At the time, one Bitcoin was worth $0.23.

The next year, with Bitcoin valued at $7.80, Gizmodo Australia said: “Bitcoin is dying.” Then, in June 2013, with the crypto priced at $111, NYMag wrote: “Bitcoin sees the grim reaper.”

By September 2017 Bitcoin’s price had built to $4,591, yet the naysayers still vented their gloomy opinions. Seeking Alpha wrote about “the death of Bitcoin” and was negative about the future of all cryptos.

Shortly afterward, Bitcoin exploded, reaching a high point of $19,499 on December 18, 2017. Even then there were doubters, and many reveled in its fall in the New Year. In January The Week discussed “the end of Bitcoin” when it was valued at $11,583.

Is the cryptocurrency market quietly dying out?

The skyrocketing price of bitcoin gave rise to ethereum, ripple and other altcoins. However, the bullish market, which has spawned over 1,500 cryptocurrencies, has turned bearish, and some cryptos are imploding.
Bittrex, a major US-based cryptocurrency exchange, said it would remove a total of 82 altcoins from ‎its listings by March 30. The majority of the delisted alternative cryptocurrencies have broken blockchains, were abandoned by their developers, or were acknowledged as scams or pump and dump schemes.

Do You Owe the IRS for Crypto-to-Crypto Trades?

To some, the attitude of crypto traders resembles the world of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.

They amble through the magical Land of Oz, following the yellow (gold) brick road, guided by a motley, sometimes bizarre, cast of characters, often oblivious to the dangers and realities of the world in which they live.

In particular, the tax world in which they live.

Many crypto traders have believed that they are "off the radar" of tax authorities, who simply won't find out about their transactions. And, even many who do accept that they may have to report their profits from crypto have taken the position that they have no tax liability until they eventually receive "fiat" currency, and should not be taxed on coin for coin exchanges.

Binance Exchange Issues Centra Risk Warning

The Centra ICO, the object of the most recent US Securities and Exchange Commission crackdown, is posing immediate risk to traders. The coin, already spread throughout exchanges, is in freefall.
