"The men on whom France relies: the soldiers of the Black Army."

"Strong peoples are fertile peoples; weak, conversely, are sterile peoples. When these peoples have been reduced to a miserable heap of decrepit old men, they will bow, breathless, beneath the whip of a young master."

— Benito Mussolini

"The man who has become free tramples underfoot that sort of contemptible well-being dreamed of by shopkeepers, Christians, cows, women, the English, and other democrats. The free man is a warrior."

A Francisque cuts the head of Communist, Gaullist and ....

The Francisque was an ancient Frankish throwing axe, used primarily by Germanic Frankish warriors during the 5th–7th centuries. Its name derives from the Franks. In 1940, Vichy France adopted it as its symbol.

The Führer as an Orator by Dr. Goebbels

What makes a political speaker capable of captivating an entire nation? In this remarkable article, Dr. Goebbels explores the psychology of political oratory and the power of language to influence the course of history. Drawing comparisons with Caesar, Napoleon, Frederick the Great and Bismarck, he develops a theory of the historical orator.

Originally published in Unser Wille und Weg in April 1939, the text is particularly fascinating as a document of the NS propaganda apparatus.

Get well soon!

London reports that English pilots are nowadays regularly being fed carrots, as these are supposedly believed to have a particularly beneficial effect on visual acuity.

We wholeheartedly applaud this measure: perhaps the RAF heroes will finally learn to distinguish hospitals and residential neighbourhoods from military targets!

Advance, advance!

The helmets shine, The swords are raised, Our ranks move forward, Our hearts know no fear.

We seek no shelter in the battle, We do not bow our heads, We do not hide behind our shields. Our courage and quick hands Shall protect us better than armour.

—Hardrada's final battle at Stamford Bridge in 1066.

Fallschirmjäger welcome their comrades of the Panzertruppe after their heroic resistance on Moerdijk bridge in May 1940, Netherlands.

The German paratroopers had been dropped deep behind Dutch defensive lines, tasked with seizing and holding the bridges until ground forces could reach them. For days, isolated and exposed, they faced counterattacks and the constant danger of being cut off. The arrival of the advancing armoured columns finally connected the airborne positions with the German forces pushing northward from Brabant.

Moerdijk was a vital link in the German advance towards the Dutch heartland. What began as an isolated airborne operation had become part of a continuous ground offensive

A cowardly man thinks he will ever live, if warfare he avoids; but old age will give him no peace, though spears may spare him.

— Hávamál, stanza 16

There are two possible outcomes before us: one, to gain victory through courage, unlikely though that may be against the man we are fighting; the other, to fall with honour and bravery. And that is better than living in shame, not daring to win honour for one's king. Therefore I shall undertake to fight against Kaldimar.

Björn defended himself for a very long time with the shears, until he was standing on his knees. Everyone marvelled at how he could put up such a defence, practically unarmed, against so many men who attacked him.

Farewell of Spanish Volunteer Legion upon their return to home (March 1944. Full translation in comments)

Long live Spain! Long live Germany!

Beneath Russian soil, your dead and our dead stand as enduring testimony to the legitimacy of our common aspirations. Above the blood of so many heroes, something shall never disappear: the indestructible brotherhood of our peoples, the warmth of understanding between our hearts, and the deep roots of a community bound together by the European and universal destiny.

Mother of Nemesio Garcia, a soldier of the Spanish Legion who fell near Volkhov.

On 23 October 1941, Soviet forces launched a powerful counterattack against the Spanish positions around Sitno. Supported by artillery, Soviet infantry managed to penetrate the defensive perimeter, bringing the fighting directly into the heart of the Spanish-held positions.

The Spanish defenders under Commander Miguel Román Garrido, were forced into brutal hand-to-hand combat. Rifles, bayonets and whatever weapons.

Commander Román personally directed his men through the fighting, singing:

— Legionaries, to fight! Legionaries, to die!

The attack was eventually repulsed, and the Spanish positions were restored. Nemesio García was among those who never returned home. Far from Spain, amid the forests and marshlands of the Volkhov. He fell for Spain and Europe, in the field of honour, alongside his comrades. He fell, "Facing The Sun."

Regarding NS writings on the British Empire, three distinct positions must be understood, separated, and examined in their proper contexts. They are frequently conflated, despite representing different strands of thought within NS commentary on Britain.

1. Admiration for the racial and historical character of the British imperial achievement.

A common theme in NS assessments of the British Empire was an admiration for the qualities attributed to the racial character of the men that made it possible to command the seas. This admiration was not necessarily an endorsement of British foreign policy or imperial interests. Rather, it reflected the recognition that the construction and maintenance of a global empire required qualities that National Socialist writers themselves considered essential to the expansion of a great power.

2. Criticism of capitalist imperialism and misguided colonial racial policy.

Alongside this admiration existed a substantial ideological criticism of the British imperial system. NS distinguished between the possession of an empire and the manner in which that empire was administered. Particularly distaeful was the British policy of educating colonial populations in European institutions, introducing European political concepts, and, in certain circumstances, preparing indigenous elites for participation in colonial administration.

From the NS racial worldview, such policies were interpreted as strategic and ideological mistakes. Their objection was rooted in the conviction that European colonial rule should preserve rather than diminish distinctions between coloniser and colonised. This was fundamentally different from a critique of colonialism on egalitarian or anti-racist grounds.

Parallel to this was the portrayal of the British Empire as an instrument of international plutocracy: a system in which financial institutions, merchants and powerful commercial networks exercised disproportionate influence over national policy. NS writers contrasted what they idealised as a nationally conscious imperial state with an imperial order they characterised as governed by financial calculations and the interests of wealthy elites.

3. The propaganda argument concerning British colonial oppression.

A third dimension was considerably more tactical and pragmatical. NS propaganda repeatedly invoked British colonial abuses, economic exploitation, and episodes of imperial violence to challenge Britain's moral authority when criticising German territorial ambitions and colonial demands.

The underlying argument was straightforward: Britain, having acquired and maintained its empire through conquest, coercion, and exploitation, was in no credible position to present itself as the moral guardian of international order or to lecture Germany on the legitimacy of territorial expansion.

Cara al Sol by Dr. Mario Navarro

Written by a young medical student from Barcelona serving with the Spanish Volunteer Division, this is an account of Spanish life on the Eastern Front. Dr. Navarro takes the reader from the bitter Russian winter to the blood-stained banks of the Volkhov and the long marches towards Leningrad.

At the heart of these pages is the Spanish soldier: his courage in adversity, his loyalty to his comrades, and, above all, his enduring attachment to the homeland he has left behind.

A tribute to Spain, her sons, and the spirit they carried across the frozen plains of the East.

Then the people's prince arose, around him stood his warriors, and he went beneath the stone arch, firm in spirit. He knew that his life was drawing towards its end, and that the measure of his earthly days was nearly spent.

Yet he would not turn away from the battle. He had ruled his people for fifty winters, and now the ancient enemy awaited him. He spoke to his companions, recalling the deeds of his youth, the battles he had fought, and the kingdoms he had defended. He declared that he would meet the dragon himself, as he had met every enemy before.

Thus the aged king went forward, carrying his shield and sword, towards the final struggle.
