Why self-care, hygge, and domestic cozy are everywhere in marketing - Vox
https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2020/1/15/21063670/hygge-self-care-domestic-cozy-marketing-brands-haus

「“Instagram, Tinder, kale salads, and Urban Outfitters are premium mediocre. Minecraft, YouTube, cooking at home, and knitting are domestic cozy,” he writes. “Premium mediocrity expends enormous energy preserving the illusion of normalcy. Domestic cozy slouches into the weirdness and simply ignores it.”

Obviously, these are rather abstract concepts and precarious ways of describing entire generations made up of millions of people, but as a way to understand marketing, they can be useful. If twee and hipster culture was a backlash to the bling and brand names of the aughts, domestic cozy is a rejection of the aspirational lifestyle aesthetic and the monetization of every hour of the day.」

"One of the more pernicious mistruths surrounding the debate about TikTok is that this will potentially lead to the splintering of the Internet; this completely erases the history of China’s Great Firewall, started 23 years ago, which effectively cut China off from most Western services. That the U.S. may finally respond in kind is a reflection of reality, not the creation of a new one."

I can still remember how that internet used to make me smile

But August makes me shiver
With every app I’d have delivered
Bad news on state dot government
I couldn’t reach Pompeo’s statement

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his five new lines
But something touched me deep inside
The day the internet died

The future was here, but no longer here.

工具二是韦氏字典的 Word of the Day 播客。

#125: Tears in Rain - Kneeling Bus
https://kneelingbus.substack.com/p/in-praise-of-the-suboptimal-city
"One of my favorite McLuhanisms is a 1964 observation about the rise of the automobile: “The horse has lost its role in transportation but has made a strong comeback in entertainment.” It’s a perfect expression of how obsolescence doesn’t necessarily mean total disappearance, as we sometimes expect it will in the moment, but instead just narrows the space in which the outmoded technology operates."

" Danny Hillis once defined technology as “everything that doesn’t work yet,” prompting the following corollary from Kevin Kelly: “Successful inventions disappear from our awareness. Electric motors were once technology—they were new and did not work well. As they evolved, they seemed to disappear, even though they proliferated and were embedded by the scores into our homes and offices. They work perfectly, silently, unminded, so they no longer register as ‘technology.’” Taking this idea one step further, the afterlife of an obsolete technology is the phase when it finds a more modest purpose and finally reenters our field of awareness (now we say “horses” whenever we drive past some horses). "Why the awe for the Second Law? The Second Law defines the ultimate purpose of life, mind, and human striving: to deploy energy and information to fight back the tide of entropy and carve out refuges of beneficial order. An underappreciation of the inherent tendency toward disorder, and a failure to appreciate the precious niches of order we carve out, are a major source of human folly."
