๐Ÿšจ SQL vs NoSQL for Data Engineering

If you're working in Data Engineering, you've probably used bothโ€”even if you didn't realize it.

โœ… SQL is excellent for:

โœ… Data warehouses

โœ… Analytics and reporting

โœ… Complex joins and aggregations

โœ… Structured business data

Examples:
ETL pipelines
Data marts
Business intelligence dashboards
Financial reporting

โœ… NoSQL is excellent for:

โœ… High-volume data ingestion

โœ… Semi-structured and unstructured data

โœ… Real-time applications

โœ… Large-scale distributed systems

Examples:
Event streams
Application logs
IoT data
User activity tracking

The question isn't:

"SQL or NoSQL?"

The real question is:

"Where does each fit in my data architecture?"

A modern data platform often looks like this:

โœ… NoSQL stores and captures massive volumes of operational data

โœ… SQL powers analytics, reporting, and business decisions

As data engineers, our job isn't to be loyal to a technology.

Our job is to choose the right tool for the workload.

Which do you use more in your current data stack?

โœ… SQL
โœ… NoSQL
โœ… Both equally

๐Ÿš€ Why Modern Applications Prefer MongoDB for Data Storage

The way we build software has changed dramatically. Today's applications generate data from mobile apps, web platforms, IoT devices, AI systems, and real-time user interactions. Managing this growing volume of diverse data requires a database that can adapt quickly.

This is one of the reasons MongoDB has become a popular choice for modern application development.

โœ… Flexible Schema Design
Unlike traditional relational databases, MongoDB allows developers to store data without enforcing a rigid table structure. This makes it easier to evolve applications as requirements change.

โœ… Built for Scale
Modern platforms must handle millions of users and massive datasets. MongoDB supports horizontal scaling through sharding, enabling applications to grow without major architectural changes.

โœ… High Performance
Document-based storage reduces the need for complex joins, helping applications achieve faster read and write operations.

โœ… Developer Friendly
MongoDB's JSON-like document model aligns naturally with modern programming languages and APIs, accelerating development and reducing complexity.

โœ… Ideal for AI and Real-Time Applications
From recommendation systems and analytics platforms to AI-powered products, MongoDB can efficiently manage structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.

The biggest lesson?

Choosing a database is not about following trends. It's about selecting the right tool for your workload, scalability requirements, and future growth.

What factors influence your database choice the most: scalability, performance, flexibility, or development speed?

When I build an AI application, choosing the backend framework is an important decision.

There are several good options, but I usually look at ๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ, ๐ƒ๐ฃ๐š๐ง๐ ๐จ, and ๐…๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ค first.

The choice really depends on what I'm building.

โœ”๏ธ ๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ makes a lot of sense when the application is mainly an AI/API backend. Since most AI tools I use are already in Python, I can keep the whole stack in one ecosystem, from LLMs and embeddings to document processing, RAG, databases, and the API itself.

โœ”๏ธ ๐ƒ๐ฃ๐š๐ง๐ ๐จ is a strong choice when the AI functionality is part of a larger web application. Its built-in ORM, authentication, admin panel, and other features can save a lot of development time.

โœ”๏ธ ๐…๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ค is still a great option when I want something simple, lightweight, and flexible, especially for smaller services or prototypes.

For an AI application, I also need to think beyond the framework:

โœ”๏ธ Authentication

โœ”๏ธ Database and data persistence

โœ”๏ธ Document processing

โœ”๏ธ Embeddings and vector search

โœ”๏ธ RAG

โœ”๏ธ Background tasks

โœ”๏ธ Testing

โœ”๏ธ Docker

โœ”๏ธ Monitoring

โœ”๏ธ Deployment

There isn't one framework that is "best" for every AI application. For the type of production AI backends I'm building, ๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ is often a practical choice because it provides a clean API layer while keeping everything close to the Python AI ecosystem.

The framework is only one piece of the puzzle.

Good architecture matters more than the framework you choose.

What do you normally use for AI applications: ๐… ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ค, or something else?

Here is the roadmap to build an AI application with FastAPI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SLLG2Z_Htw

๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ ๐ฏ๐ฌ ๐‘๐„๐’๐“ ๐€๐๐ˆ โ€” Whatโ€™s the Difference?

One thing I see quite often when people start building APIs with Python is confusion between FastAPI and REST API.

In reality, they are not the same thing.

๐‘๐„๐’๐“ ๐€๐๐ˆ is an architectural approach for designing APIs around resources, HTTP methods, stateless communication, and standard HTTP responses.

๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ is a Python web framework that helps you build APIs.

For example, in an AI application, I might have:

GET /documents
๐™ถ๐™ด๐šƒ /๐š๐š˜๐šŒ๐šž๐š–๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐šœ
๐™ฟ๐™พ๐š‚๐šƒ /๐š๐š˜๐šŒ๐šž๐š–๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐šœ
๐™ถ๐™ด๐šƒ /๐š๐š˜๐šŒ๐šž๐š–๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐šœ/{๐š’๐š}
๐™ฟ๐š„๐šƒ /๐š๐š˜๐šŒ๐šž๐š–๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐šœ/{๐š’๐š}
๐™ณ๐™ด๐™ป๐™ด๐šƒ๐™ด /๐š๐š˜๐šŒ๐šž๐š–๐šŽ๐š—๐š๐šœ/{๐š’๐š}

These endpoints can follow ๐‘๐„๐’๐“ principles.

๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ is the tool I use to implement them in Python.

So, a simple way to remember it:

๐‘๐„๐’๐“ = how the API is designed
๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ = the framework used to build it

๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ also gives us useful features such as request validation, automatic API documentation, dependency injection, and strong support for asynchronous applications.

Understanding this distinction makes it much easier to understand ๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ and, more importantly, to design APIs properly.

While moving from other web frameworks to ๐…๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ, one question came to my mind:

For a small project, this is enough:

@๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘. ๐’๐’„๐’–๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•๐’”")

๐’‚๐’”๐’š๐’๐’„ ๐’… ๐’๐’„๐’–๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•๐’”():

...

So why introduce APIRouter?

The answer became clearer when I started thinking about a real application.

As the project grows, I may have authentication, users, documents, search, AI processing, and many more endpoints.

Keeping all of these routes in one place can quickly become difficult to maintain.

Thatโ€™s where APIRouter becomes useful.

It allows me to organize routes by feature and keep the application structure clean.

So my takeaway is simple:

Itโ€™s not required to make FastAPI work. It becomes useful when I want the application to stay organized and maintainable as it grows.

This was one of those small FastAPI concepts that made much more sense once I started looking at the bigger picture.

As I build my ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐€๐๐ˆ, Iโ€™m realizing that building an API is about much more than writing endpoints.

Getting an endpoint to work is just the beginning. A real application needs a solid structure and several pieces working together.

That means thinking about:

- Validating incoming data

- Organizing routes and business logic

- Connecting to a database

- Handling errors properly

- Implementing authentication and permissions

- Testing and deploying the application

Each step introduces a new challenge and a new concept to learn.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m building this project step by step as part of my ๐… My goal is to go beyond isolated examples and demonstrate how these concepts come together in a practical AI application.

As I continue building my AI Document API with FastAPI, Iโ€™m reminding myself to look beyond the happy path.

Itโ€™s easy to test an endpoint with valid data and celebrate when everything works.

But what happens when:

- The client sends invalid data?

- The requested document doesn't exist?

- A database operation fails?

- A user tries to access something they aren't authorized to access?

For me, the goal isnโ€™t simply to make each endpoint work. Itโ€™s to understand how it behaves when things go wrong, too.

Thatโ€™s one of the things Iโ€™m exploring as I build this project step by step with FastAPI.

A good API should handle the expected path well and fail predictably when things go wrong.

As developers, we should test more than whether our code works. We should also test how it fails.

When reviewing an API endpoint, what do you check first: input validation, error handling, or authorization?
