AMC To Add Ethereum, Litecoin, and BCH Payments Alongside Bitcoin
To further capitalize on those moviegoers who have embraced cryptocurrencies, troubled US movie theatre chain AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. confirmed that, besides the already-announced bitcoin (BTC), it will be accepting payment in ethereum (ETH), litecoin (LTC), and bitcoin cash (BCH).
This comes after the chain made waves in the cryptosphere last month when it stated it would allow customers to buy tickets and snacks with BTC by the end of this year.
Adam Aron, CEO of AMC, unveiled the plan in a recent tweet addressed to “cryptocurrency enthusiasts”.
AMC “has announced we will accept Bitcoin for online ticket and concession payments by year-end 2021. I can confirm today that when we do so, we also expect that we similarly will accept Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash,” the CEO said.
Last month, Aron shared his opinion that cryptocurrencies were on track to increase their importance in the coming years in a much-discussed tweet.
“If it remains safe and reliable to use, it would seem that crypto currency will get even more important in future years," he said. "From reading your comments, I see that many of you are crypto enthusiasts. AMC is pleased to get out in front, by planning to accept payment online in bitcoin.”
Embracing crypto could provide the chain with the much-needed financial boost. AMC has managed to escape bankruptcy owing to a USD 917m cash infusion by the company’s investors. The business welcomed the new equity and debt capital, recognizing it “should allow the company to make it through this dark coronavirus-impacted winter.”
The CEO’s latest announcement has also triggered a number of positive reactions by crypto users on social media, with one particular group of cryptocurrency supporters voicing their demand that the company add a new crypto to the mix - specifically, the dogecoin (DOGE) community.
The issue of AMC’s notorious meme stock also resurfaced in the course of the debate.
At one point on September 15, the AMC stock went up to USD 47.7, then ended the day at USD 46.84. Its year-to-date change is 2,230%.

Investors Bet On NFTs by Valuing Sorare At USD 4.3B
Fantasy football platform Sorare said it has raised USD 680m in its Series B round as the company aims to accelerate its expansion into "the unique world of NFT fantasy sports."
The round was led by Softbank, among other investors, that valued the company at USD 4.3bn, per the announcement.
"We saw the immense potential that blockchain and NFTs brought to unlock a new way for football clubs, footballers, and their fans to experience a deeper connection with each other," Nicolas Julia, CEO and co-founder of Sorare, was quoted as saying.
Sorare operates at the intersection of the non-fungible token (NFT) market, sports cards, and global fantasy sports. It claims it has traded over USD 150m worth of cards on its platform since January.
"The number of monthly active paying Sorare users grew by 34X between Q2 2020 and Q2 2021, with quarterly sales increasing by 51X over the same period," they said without specifying.
Sorare added that it has over 600,000 registered users and has licensed players from over 180 football organizations, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, Juventus, the French, and German Football Federation. The three-year-old company aims to onboard the top 20 football leagues globally and the top 50 football associations, across not just men's football but also women's football. They did not specify when it might happen.

Brace For 'Really Volatile' 6-12 Months in Crypto Regulatory Sphere - Novogratz
There is “absolutely no doubt” that Gary Gensler, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman installed earlier this year, is seeking to regulate crypto, and that he “wants to be the sheriff of cryptoville,” according to CEO of Galaxy Digital Mike Novogratz.
Speaking in a fireside chat on the last day of crypto research firm Messari’s Mainnet 2021 event in New York City on Wednesday, Novogratz shared his view on the recent regulatory crackdown on the crypto industry in the US in particular.
He opined that any suggestion that Gary Gensler does not know what he is doing is simply wrong.
“Gary Gensler is smart, there is absolutely no doubt about it,” Novogratz said, before he went on to state that this year “is going to be really challenging” for the industry in terms of regulations.
There is “no doubt” that Gensler wants to regulate the crypto space, the former investment banker-turned crypto entrepreneur said.
Novogratz further explained that the way the SEC chair most likely plans to go about regulating the space is to “try really hard” to get the current Democratically-controlled Congress to pass legislation “that gives him the right to regulate crypto.”
“I think it’s going to be a really volatile six to twelve months in the regulatory sphere,” Novogratz said, before adding that he believes the crypto community “did a terrible job” at educating lawmakers in Washington, D.C. about what the crypto industry really is and what’s important for it.
Moreover, Novogratz also said that as a result of increasing regulations, his company, Galaxy Digital, is planning to spend more resources on lobbying US legislators going forward.
“We’re committed now to spend more time in Washington D.C. I’m trying to hire a super guy to help us there, to educate senators, congressmen, and even to work with the people at the different regulatory agencies,” the former investment banker said.
Ending on an optimistic note, Novogratz also argued that, although regulators are getting tougher, the situation is not all bad, and the industry even has supporters on the inside of some of the regulatory agencies.
“It’s not like they’re starting at zero… A lot of the young people at the agencies are big owners of crypto,” the CEO concluded.

How Traditional Finance World Could Cause Traditional Global Financial Crisis
Daniel Tischer, Lecturer in Management, University of Bristol, Adam Leaver, Professor of Accounting & Society, University of Sheffield, and Jonathan Beaverstock, Professor of International Management, University of Bristol.
At the heart of the global financial crisis of 2007-09 was an obscure credit derivative called the collateralised debt obligation (CDO). CDOs were financial products based on debts – most notoriously, residential mortgages –which were sold by banks to other banks and institutional investors.
The profitability of these CDOs largely depended upon homeowners’ ability to repay their mortgages. When people began to default, the CDO market collapsed. And because CDOs were interwoven with other financial and insurance markets, their collapse bankrupted many banks and left others requiring government and central bank support.
Many thought this would put an end to the market for complex structured credit derivatives, but it didn’t. As of 2021, a close cousin of the CDO known as the collateralized loan obligation or CLO was approaching the equivalent value of the CDO market at its peak. A record number of CLOs were issued in August, and the market as a whole is approaching USD 1trn in value. Many within the financial services industry say that there is nothing to worry about, but there are good reasons why they could be wrong.

Bitcoin Miners Secure More Nuclear Deals Amid Climate Concerns
Bitcoin (BTC) miners keep on finding ways to use the excess power which would otherwise go wasted – this time shaking hands with operators of struggling, carbon-free nuclear plants.
This may be a perfect match as the nuclear power plants need more customers amid rising competition that has cheaper power sources, while Bitcoin miners need exactly what they have to offer - stable and carbon-free power, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing “executives and analysts.”
Also, this may be a particularly well-suited solution for the miners, as they continue to face backlash over their operations’ power consumption and environmental impact.
According to the report, in Ohio, starting in December, Standard Power mining center will get power from nuclear generator Energy Harbor Corp. Furthermore, Talen Energy Corp. entered into a joint venture with Bitcoin-mining company TeraWulf Inc. They started land development next to its nuclear plant in Pennsylvania for a mining facility which is expected to be the size of four football fields.
New nuclear projects are reportedly eyeing cryptocurrency miners as well. As reported, in July, Oklo, a California-based company developing clean energy plants, announced a 20-year commercial partnership with Compass Mining, a US-based online marketplace for Bitcoin mining hardware and hosting, to introduce advanced nuclear fission to supplement fossil fuels and "promote diversity and sustainability in the energy sources used by miners."
This deal doesn’t include a set price for power, but Whit Gibbs, chief executive of Compass, told the WSJ that he is confident that the companies will agree on a price that allows for profitable cryptocurrency mining. Jacob DeWitte, co-founder and chief executive at Oklo, said he had received inquiries from other interested Bitcoin miners, but federal approval is still needed, he added, and this isn’t likely to happen until 2023-2025.

Regulator is Like a ‘Bulldozer’ but Crypto is ‘Resistant to State Control
The regulatory battles against the crypto industry continue, with new ones instigated daily it seems – as, in the US, the latest to find itself as the mark is crypto exchange Kraken. Yet, while some warn of bulldozing power of regulations, others argue that crypto in its essence is unstoppable.
Yesterday, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued “an order filing and settling charges against respondent Payward Ventures, Inc. d/b/a Kraken … for illegally offering margined retail commodity transactions in digital assets,” including bitcoin (BTC), and failing to register as a futures commission merchant. The company must pay a USD 1.25m civil monetary penalty.
Meanwhile, per Acting Director of Enforcement Vincent McGonagle, this is part of the regulator’s “broader effort to protect US customers,” stating that margined, leveraged, or financed digital asset trading offered to retail US customers “must occur on properly registered and regulated exchanges in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.”
Meanwhile, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler said that US cryptocurrency markets and regulated platforms will “not end well” if they stay outside regulators' purview, Bloomberg reported. “There are trading venues and lending venues where they coalesce around these, and they have not just dozens but hundreds and sometimes thousands of tokens on them,” he reiterated on Monday during the Code Conference in California.
And there are more reports that crypto will not see an ally during the President Joe Biden’s administration. The White House nominated Saule Omarova to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, reported Bloomberg, noting that Omarova’s “critiques of digital tokens fit right in with statements that have recently emerged from government watchdogs” – such as that of Gensler.
“It took several years for regulators to wake up, but it’s like a bulldozer,” Jim Angel, an associate professor specializing in market structure at Georgetown University is quoted as saying. “It’s slow, it’s steady and it will grind down anything in its path.”
Yet, some, like Karen Shaw Petrou, a managing partner at research firm Federal Financial Analytics, suggest that it may be too late for market participants to find common ground with regulators, stating that crypto “conveniently believed that spouting often dubious inclusion and innovation propositions would forestall regulation,” and that the sector “was extraordinarily intoxicated with the cool factor.”

First Volcano Bitcoin Mined, Says El Salvador’s Preside
El Salvador’s president seems hell-bent on making Bitcoin (BTC) firsts – this time announcing the first BTC mined with volcanoes (for newcomers, yes, you read that right - volcanoes).
“We’re still testing and installing, but this is officially the first Bitcoin mining from the volcanode,” tweeted Nayib Bukele today.
The idea of using the nation’s active volcanoes to mine BTC is not new. After he declared the cryptocurrency legal tender in June with the country passing the Bitcoin Bill, Bukele followed it up with plans for El Salvador to use geothermal energy from volcanoes to mine BTC, saying that a state-owned company could provide mining facilities with affordable and green energy.
Then just a couple of days ago, Bukele shared a short video that showed mining rigs going online at a geothermal power plant that harnesses volcano energy.
No further details have been shared, such as the number of active machines or the amount of allocated electricity.
Bukele has also been reporting on the rising numbers related to the Chivo BTC wallet, and, per his tweet, on October 1, “2.73 million people already using chivowallet.” In comparison, on September 20, he claimed that the app had 1.1m users, or 17% of the country's population, while a week later that number was USD 2.25m. He added that now there are “180 new users every minute (users not downloads). 1 million dollars in remittances being received every day.”

Can You Trust Centralized Big Tech?
Laurin Weissinger, Lecturer in Cybersecurity, Tufts University.
Apple’s plan to scan customers’ phones and other devices for images depicting child sexual abuse generated a backlash over privacy concerns, which led the company to announce a delay.
Apple, Facebook, Google and other companies have long scanned customers’ images that are stored on the companies’ servers for this material. Scanning data on users’ devices is a significant change.
However well-intentioned, and whether or not Apple is willing and able to follow through on its promises to protect customers’ privacy, the company’s plan highlights the fact that people who buy iPhones are not masters of their own devices. In addition, Apple is using a complicated scanning system that is hard to audit. Thus, customers face a stark reality: If you use an iPhone, you have to trust Apple.
Specifically, customers are forced to trust Apple to only use this system as described, run the system securely over time, and put the interests of their users over the interests of other parties, including the most powerful governments on the planet.
Despite Apple’s so-far-unique plan, the problem of trust isn’t specific to Apple. Other large tech companies also have considerable control over customers’ devices and insight into their data.

Nordic Bitcoin Miners Face Double Challenge, But Industry Still 'Quite Optimistic'
Bitcoin (BTC) and crypto miners have flocked to the Nordics in recent years, as it's a region blessed with an abundance of cheap and clean energy, a cold climate, and a stable regulatory framework. But with electricity prices rising sharply this fall, along with mounting political pressure, miners here may be up for a challenging time ahead.
Europe’s ongoing energy crisis has already received widespread attention over the past month, with both natural gas and electricity prices soaring to new highs in a number of European countries.
And although less impacted than countries further south on the continent, the rising prices are also felt in the Nordics, where several major crypto mining firms have set up their electricity-guzzling mining operations, with favorite locations being Norway, northern Sweden, and Iceland.
Today’s energy situation marks a sharp contrast to the typical market conditions in the region, with energy analyst Olav Johan Botnen at the energy market researcher Volue Insight, telling DW earlier this year that the Nordic region under normal weather conditions has “an expected oversupply of power of nearly 30 terawatt-hours a year.”
According to findings from Statistics Norway, electricity prices for Norwegian households in the second quarter of this year were already three times as high as a year earlier. And although commercial users – which crypto miners are generally defined as – pay less than households, they are not spared from the impact either.

Chinese Firms Exiting Mainland as Crypto Crackdown Bites
Chinese crypto companies are exiting the country in droves after finally admitting defeat in their struggle against a regulatory storm. Many had spent the past few years attempting to rebrand themselves in Mainland China as purveyors of “blockchain”-related business and educational providers. But it appears the pressure of the nation’s latest crypto crackdown may have finally taken its toll on big names such as Huobi and Poloniex.
Per the China Securities Journal, “more than 20 “crypto-related companies have “announced their withdrawal from the Chinese market” in recent days.
This number includes smaller crypto exchanges, mining hardware providers and manufacturers, and mining pools.
The report suggested that the final straw was a joint declaration by regulators, a number of ministries, and the central People’s Bank of China (PBoC) last month - which confirmed the government’s hard-line stance on crypto and warned overseas platforms targeting Chinese customers that they could face retribution.
Huobi appears to have gotten wind of the regulatory change ahead of time and reportedly pulled most of its staff out of the Mainland in a “scramble” in the days before the declaration was made public.
In the case of Poloniex, an exchange masterminded by Tron (TRX) supremo Justin Sun, the picture is somewhat confusing. The journalist Colin Wu took to Twitter to post a screenshot of what appears to be an email from the Poloniex support team. The email states that “Mainland China has become a restricted jurisdiction, adding:
“We are very sorry to announce that Poloniex cannot continue to provide services to users in Mainland China.”
However, Wu also posted an image of what he claims was a later email, with Poloniex stating that a “system error” had caused the email to be sent, adding “sincere apologies” and advising account holders that their “funds are safe.”

Rallying Quickly, Growing Fastly, Surging Highly and 20 Crypto Jokes
After the previous week ended with bitcoin becoming a more favored investment at the expense of ethereum once again, the gaming industry is spurring growth in the blockchain-powered dapp sector with DeFi and NFT losing ground, and a global investigation by ICIJ - dubbed the Pandora Papers - exposed how the world elite was using offshore structures and trusts in tax havens to conceal their wealth. Then, bitcoin broke the USD 55,000 resistance, returned to USD 1trn market capitalization, and decoupled from stocks, while Bitcoin Lightning Network is growing faster than public metrics show. Stellar rallied on the MoneyGram partnership announcement, AXS once again surged to an ATH after the team behind it announced a new DEX, and Shiba Inu soared on high volume, then neared the top 10 list. Meanwhile, deposits on the ‘big four’ South Korean exchanges were up 1,368%, CoinSwitch Kuber said it raised over USD 260m at a valuation of USD 1.9bn, and CoinShares invested in Swiss-based online bank FlowBank.
While crypto regulation is on the cards in Latin America, Chainalysis found that India’s crypto market is more ‘mature’ than those of Vietnam and Pakistan. A leading Salvadoran engineering academic claimed that volcano-powered Bitcoin mining could be ruinous for the nation’s economy, while President Bukele blasted critics as BTC price boomed; the US SEC Chairman ruled out the possibility of enacting a China-style crypto crackdown, the IMF suggested that economic leaders fight back against crypto by issuing their own CBDCs, the BIS said that the financial system is in 'an age of disruption', and the FBS warned that countries should work to prevent 'regulatory arbitrage' for stablecoins.
At least six XRP holders will get their day in court in the Ripple-SEC battle, while the regulator served up Circle with a subpoena. Unstoppable Domains and 30 of the world’s crypto wallets formed the Wallet Alliance, Sino-Global will enter a Bitcoin mining machine joint-venture with Highsharp to work on the development of mining machine 'Thor', and the Cryptoverse with Busta Rhymes pointed out the flaws of centralization after Facebook went down for hours. North Korea is conducting spear-phishing activities on the crypto industry, and while Compound Finance faced more trouble when USD 65m in COMP was dripped into the contract plagued by a bug, the anonymous developer behind Evolved Apes disappeared with USD 2.9m in project funds.

Local Stablecoin ‘Crackdown’ Builds a Case For Decentralized Money
South Korea is unintentionally sending another warning to the users of centralized digital assets, showing that they can be tracked and controlled.
This time, local government authorities in the South Korean city of Iksan say they will clamp down hard on cases of illegal usage of a local stablecoin.
Newsis reported that the government in the North Jeolla Province city had announced a “crackdown to eradicate the illegal distribution of” the Iksan Dairom token. The blockchain-powered coin makes use of technology provided by the telecoms giant KT and its smartphone-based Good Pay ecosystem.
Similar KT-led projects are in use in other South Korean cities, such as Gumi, Gimpo, and Ulsan.
The tokens are a replacement for the paper-based gift certificates many South Korean cities used to issue in an attempt to promote local businesses that are in danger of being dwarfed by bigger nationwide or international brands.
According to the Iksan city website, in addition to large superstores run by conglomerates, a number of other businesses are also forbidden from accepting Dairom as a means of payment, namely: casinos, gambling, and lottery-related businesses, illegal forms of speculation, adult stores, massage parlors and pubs that provide “entertainment”-related services.
However, the city claims it has evidence that many smaller businesses are attempting to flout these regulations.
The city said that it was using blockchain technology to analyze Big Data from the local currency operating system to “monitor suspicious transactions such as fraudulent usages involving the token in “real-time financial transactions.”
Iksan added that it wanted to investigate cases whereby recipients of the tokens had obtained coins “without selling goods or providing services,” as well as cases where token payments exceeded the value of goods or services.
In some cases, merchants appear to have “repeatedly” purchased tokens “under someone else’s name and then exchanged them” for fiat KRW.
On-the-spot fines would be issued for minor offenses, the city added, adding that it would seek to prosecute major offenders and hit them with fines of up to USD 16,740.
A city spokesperson was quoted as stating,
