It's the 21st century,
and nothing has really changed.
Racism is as rife today
as in the days of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.
The blood of the enslaved and of immigrants
still cries out from the streets
of a land that calls itself free.
Even God, who made us in His image,
does not discriminate.
Before Him we are the same,
Exhibiting His glory in different shades and colours.
It is never a curse to be born black,
and never a blessing to be born white.
To think yourself better because of your race
is the lowest kind of thinking.
We see it on football pitches,
in classrooms, on ordinary streets,
even in churches.
What is wrong with being black?
What is our crime?
White supremacists have walked away from their wrongs for far too long.
Today we mourn Javits Frimpong,
a Ghanaian boy, fifteen years old,
minding his own business.
Months of bullying,
then shot dead.
This grief is beyond words.
Worse, it may not be the last.
Tales told, stories untold,
mysteries yet to unfold.
