Proof of Work (PoW) is a consensus mechanism that requires miners to solve complex cryptographic puzzles to validate transactions and create new blocks. The first miner to solve the puzzle adds the block to the blockchain and earns rewards.

Miners compete using computational power to solve puzzles. The solution is easily verified by the network, ensuring the integrity of the blockchain. This mechanism prevents malicious attacks, as altering the blockchain would require controlling over 50% of the network’s computational power, known as a '51% attack.'

🌐 Why It Matters:
PoW is crucial for the security and decentralization of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. However, it has been criticized for high energy consumption, leading to the development of alternatives like Proof of Stake (PoS), which aim to provide similar security with less environmental impact.
