Our ears are microcosms of our body and support our overall health.

Massaging the ear is very important for our overall health as there are over 200 points on the ear which reflect the body. Even the King of Chinese Medicine, Dr Sun Simiao practiced this daily saying: always exercise your ear.

The ears are connected to the face by muscles and points. If the ears droop, so will the face. The ears can help tighten the facial muscles, keep lips and eyes young. Make sure you spend time massaging them. This exercise can also help those suffering from tinnitus.

Use the index finger and thumb to massage the ear as shown. Press and tug gently.
Fold the ear several times with gentle pressure. This helps overall health and helps to lift the face, lips and eyes.
Use your two fingers to massage the front and back of the ear. This stimulates several points on the San Jiao meridian and points GB2 and SI19.
You can also warm up your hands by rubbing them and place them on your ears for several seconds.
Practice this daily until you feel the heat of the ears or they go pink/red.
Understanding body odour

This post is intended for both men and women, adults and pubertal adults. It contains scientific terms but attempt has been made to simplify it for general consumption. It's going to be a long read so grab some popcorn.

Your body produces a characteristic smell which may range from being imperceptible, to being normal, and then repulsive. When the smell is repulsive it is called an odour. Two things are generally responsible for the smell produced by your skin:
1. Bacteria on your skin
2. Sweat secretion on your skin

Interaction between skin bacteria and sweat produce body smell or odour. Glands are small organs in the body that produce chemical substances that control various processes in the body, for instance sweat is secreted from sweat glands. There are two types of sweat glands; the eccrine glands found all over the skin secret sweat out of the skin pores onto the skin surface to help cool it down when it (the sweat) evaporates. This gland is found in all persons male or female, and at all ages. The second, the apocrine glands are found in specific places like the armpit and the groin (the areas where the pubic hairs are found). The apocrine gland is important because they do not begin to function till puberty and are thus typically responsible for body odours. It also explains why the characteristic 'adolescence smell' noticed in boys doesn't start till at puberty, because that is when the apocrine gland kicks into action.

Two major difference between eccrine and apocrine glands
โ—Eccrine glands secret sweat directly into the skin surface while apocrine glands are usually attached to hair follicles. Thus the hairier you are the more of these glands you will have and the more prone you are to body smell.
โ—while eccrine glands produce sweat that containst mostly salt and small amounts of urea, the apocrine glands' produce sweat that contains protein, fats and oils as well as other compounds (notice that it is easier to get rid of sweat on your skin than sweat on your armpit and groin).

Bacteria interaction with sweat.

When bacteria on the skin interact with sweat, especially those from apocrine glands, they break down the chemical substances present in the sweat like proteins, lipids, steroids and leucine (don't get worked up if the names sound strange) to produce products (metabolites) that can give the person the characteristic odour. Products like fatty acids and sulfur containing alcohols (thioalcohols)

At this point note that:
At puberty, apocrine glands start to function --ใ€‹ pubic hairs develope --ใ€‹ the hairier the more sweat you produce --ใ€‹ the more sweat you produce the more the substances (precursors) available for bacteria like Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus to act on and produce body odour.

Taking your bath and body odour.

When you spend long intervals between baths, you give the bacteria on the skin enough time to interact with the sweat on your skin to produce body odour. The smell of your armpit 24hrs after your last bath is a clear reminder of this. When you bath you wash off sweat from your skin, reduce the quantity of bacteria on your skin, as well as rid your skin of the smelly products of bacteria metabolism (breakdown of sweat components into smaller units). Frequent baths therefore keeps you fresh and less likely to smell.

Antiperspirants deodorants and antibacterial soaps

Antiperspirants are chemical formulations that reduce sweating by blocking sweat pores of the skin. Deodorants make your skin acidic and unfavorable for (some) bacteria to grow on. Antibacterial soaps are sometimes prescribed (among other reasons) for persons trying to get rid of persistent body odours proving difficult to curb. They help reduce the population of specific kinds of bacteria on the skin. Next time you see these labels in the supermarket, don't forget that:

Antiperspirants - reduce sweating
Deodorants - prevent (some) bacteria from growing or multiplying
Antibacterial - reduce population of bacteria

Other factors that cause or affect body odour:
โ—Gender - men are more prone to body odour than women. They have more hairs and more apocrine glands.
โ—Gene- Genetics is also involved in body odour. For instance it has been discovered that there is a gene (ABC11 gene) responsible for underarm odour so that persons who lacked this gene are less likely to produce the characteristic armpit smell because their sweat lacks certain substances that bacteria breakdown to produce armpit odour. Most Asians have been found to lack this gene and produce lesser underarm smell compared to Africans that are prone to smelly armpits.
โ—Age - the chemical composition of the sweat changes with age so that adolescents seem to have a characteristic smell while Oldies also have theirs.
โ—Diet - spicy foods make you sweat more and thus increase the chance of having a bad odour. Food aromas may also be carried in your sweet. Drinks with caffeine and alcohol may make you sweat more.

Next we will look at Oral hygiene and general personal hygiene to help with body odours.
